During the course of half an hour at the Te Anau Bird Sanctuary I saw 13 kereru. One bird was captive (recovering from injury). One bird was on the ground feeding on clover. Three birds were in kowhai trees, eating leaves. Six birds were sitting in a large willow that was just coming into bud. They were just resting.
Two birds were flying, one appeared to be chasing the other.

This grey duck ducking was rescued from a remote area of Doubtful Sound by the crew of a Deep Cove Charters vessel. It had become separated from its family and when attempts were made to return it, the mother rejected it.
The duckling was brought to the Te Anau Wildlife Centre where it is thriving. We hope to return it to its wild home when it is fledged. The photo shows it paddling in Lake Te Anau.
