This young Steller’s Jay has been coming to eat peanuts from my patio for 1 week now. It stuffs all the peanuts it can fit into his beak and flys off towards the Presidio. It has just lost it’s downy feathers and is starting to develop blue markings on its crest. Have not seen a Steller’s jay in my yard before (I have only in the past observed California scrub jays). I have noticed though that the Steller’s Jay is dominated by the the scrub jays. I know this bird likes heavily wooded areas so not sure why it turned up to my backyard, especially in summer. My theory is it got kicked out of its territory by its parents.
