Galiano citizen scientists unite with regional experts to create an inventory of the island's flora and fauna, providing the global research community with a sample of the greater biodiversity of the Salish Sea.
Surveys will be conducted island-wide, covering a spectrum of vibrant marine, terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems that are unique to the region and considered to be of critical conservation concern within Canada.
In concert with the Canadian Wildlife Federation's nationwide initiative to document Canada's flora and fauna, this 24 hour event will contribute to an ongoing initiative to document the island biodiversity, through the combined efforts of local citizen scientists of the Biodiversity Galiano project, the Galiano Naturalists, and the Galiano Conservancy Association.
You can participate in many ways: whether identifying, photographing and helping take note of species discovered; attending talks, meals and other public events; or doing field sketches of Galiano's habitats with renowned ornithologist and artist Rob Butler.
The event organizing committee gratefully acknowledges the traditional territories of Coast Salish peoples, on which we are guests. May this event contribute to greater awareness and respect for all life in the Salish Sea.
