Colorado Front Range Ringtails

The ringtail, also known as ringtail cat, civet cat, or bassarisk, is a nocturnal and omnivorous member of the raccoon family, Procyonidae. Its scientific name, Bassariscus astutus, translates to "cunning little fox". It is an excellent climber and typically associated with rocky areas.

Records of ringtails in Boulder County are sparse. Prior to 2014, only one documented ringtail occurrence is known*. Recent sightings in Boulder County (and possibly north into Larimer County) suggest that the ringtail may be expanding its range northward.

Because of the ringtail's nocturnal nature and propensity for steep, rocky terrain, they are problematic to study. Rock climbers and hikers that recreate in ringtail habitat can provide valuable data by sharing their sightings. menos ↑
