Studying the LRG Valley

This spring we were invited to take part in a study of the fauna and flora of some selected areas in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. We will be providing insect and nocturnal specimen surveying with stationary lighting rigs, bucket traps and transit based sampling efforts. We will post our results here. All specimens will end up housed in our collection at the Sam Houston State Natural History Collections building in Huntsville,Texas.

We are grateful to our friends and sponsors within Texas Parks and Wildlife for their support of citizen science and for the opportunity to enrich the knowledge of this amazing transitional ecosystem in the extreme South West of Texas.

We encourage you to learn how to use the TPWD T.E.A.M. System to help you research and understand the Texas ecosystems present in the places you intend to visit. You can see this free, online ecosystem profiling tool here:

Post Trip Summary:

We managed two complete nights of stationary surveying, 2 nights of bucket trapping and two days of long forays into suitable habitat and may have located some Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) on our trip. It certainly was some amazing and beautiful habitat. We will be processing photography and specimen records and posting them here.

Thanks again to Ben and Tony for all their hospitality and knowledge - as always we learned much more than we taught and we are so much better for it.
