This project aims to collect observations about Mediterranean sponges (Porifera), some of the trickiest animals to be identified even for specialists.

Sponges tendo to be highly variable shape, color and even internal traits (such as morphology of skeletal structures). That's why they are often very difficult to ID only based on pictures.

On the other hand, the project welcomes IDs that have been validated by lab analysis (e.g., microscope, genetics etc). When this is the case, please tag your observation accordingly - it will be good to build a list of sponges for which we can have a validated image! menos ↑
