This small slender, ringbum ant was found crawling through the leaf litter. I have edited my original size estimation which was too low. After relocating and re-measuring the ant it measures 7mm or just over. I got a few shots off before it disappeared. Will have another look for it tomorrow morning. Interesting one - cannot find it in the book.

A scrappy expanse of silky refuges and capture webs littered with body parts of previous victims. When preferred prey is entangled, the female spiders emerge from their 'nests' and overpower it by grabbing its extremities. In this case, a wasp https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/9319446.
Presumably they inject venom because after a minute or so the prey stops struggling. Then they snip it out of the web and carry it into one of several 'nests' or refuges.
Unwanted prey, often beetles (see https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/9319435 ) are also killed but sometimes left in the web, uneaten. Ants, in this case, Maranoplus ( https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/9319390 )scavenge around the periphery of the webs, feasting on unwanted beetles or other left-overs.

Puffie Power Play

An incredible encounter with two male Puffies in combat on the beach at the Cape of Grope (say "Good Hope" really fast with a local accent). I watched them for an hour, during which time they had a couple of dunkings which didn't seem to bother them. Don't know how long they'd been at it before I got there, but there was no sign of any letting up when I left. Video of some of the action here: https://vimeo.com/138773900.

Originally I had assumed this was a Puffie pair mating, but in light of some of the comments made here about sexual dimorphism (not apparent in these two individuals), and in view of the fact that I couldn't see anything going on that looked like copulation, I'm persuaded that this was a pre-mating dominance ritual. Although I must say it mostly seemed like rather gentle and serene combat. I wonder if there was a lady in waiting anywhere in the vicinity...

Kleinmond gwarrie nest #2 currently being reared

20 May 2019:

Collected large silken caterpillar shelter on Kleinmond coastal path in Cassine peragua barbara. It is heaving with caterpillars!

25 May 2019:

I noticed the first cocoon at the bottom of the tub, a rather hard construction made of silk and frass and attached to the floor.

4 July 2019:

My first two little moths emerged! They seem quite small compared with the size of the caterpillars I photographed, but perhaps these are males. Or perhaps they come from smaller individuals. Or maybe this just is how it is...
