we heard a strange screeching noise and followed it to this sun squirrel that was attacking something. It stopped with the noises but as we were taking pictures we realised it was eating a frog. I couldnt get a front shot but my husband might have so will try to upload these later. These are mine and you can see the frogs legs clearly in and out of frame

Major of C bertolonii. Nesting in rotten wood. For comparison with C dicksonii. I think the eye of C bertolonii is comparatively smaller and the head and alitrunk are broader and more robust but otherwise they look pretty similar.

Edit1: I have added a face to face collage of the 2 ant majors in question: C dicksonii (L) and C bertolonii (R)

Kleinmond gwarrie nest #2 currently being reared

20 May 2019:

Collected large silken caterpillar shelter on Kleinmond coastal path in Cassine peragua barbara. It is heaving with caterpillars!

25 May 2019:

I noticed the first cocoon at the bottom of the tub, a rather hard construction made of silk and frass and attached to the floor.

4 July 2019:

My first two little moths emerged! They seem quite small compared with the size of the caterpillars I photographed, but perhaps these are males. Or perhaps they come from smaller individuals. Or maybe this just is how it is...

Kleinmond imbricata crowd currently being reared

21 April 2019:

Collected a very ordinary looking shelter made with frass and silk on Erica imbricata. I noticed the usual couple of ants patrolling the twig, they often appear on my food plant collections. But then, while I was prodding the little nest to see if I could make the cat come out, I discovered a whole lot of the ants also living in the shelter. The weird thing is that the caterpillar seems absolutely fine. I've never seen this before! I hope to keep the whole lot alive and see what happens.

This was one of those strange and unusual sights that you're not quite sure is taking place. A duck eating a fish!
It was a little before 9 o'clock, a December morning and here this yellow-billed duck suddenly had this decent sized fish in its mouth. For quite some time it attempted to get it nicely positioned to swallow it. Not so easy. It dropped it over and over which makes me think the fish had to already be dead. When the Yellow-billed duck mate came close it pretty much paid no attention yet the one with the fish tried frantically to swallow its catch. At that time, back in 2015, I did inquire from the birding fraternity around Jhb if they'd seen anything like this and apparently not! What type of fish I'm not sure.. maybe a bream..

One of these days when golfers seriously got under my nose! And I'm one... Early morning sitting watching this pair and then just as they began interacting I had to move aside to let them through. What was interesting was how the one Malachite in fact stuck its bill into the other. There was a fight over the fingerling that had been caught. I just wish I could have got closer and focused without being disturbed. A few interesting maneuvers though!
