Great Egret (Ardea alba) Large, white heron with a long neck and long yellow bill for spearing prey. Black legs and feet. Breeding adults have long white plumes that trail from back, extending beyond tail and green facial skin can be seen around the eye. In immature and non-breeding adults, bill and leg colors are duller, plumes absent. Egrets suffered population collapses at the end of the 19th century from the harvesting of plumes for ladies fashions.
