  2. Insectageddon: is global insect extinction real?

News headlines in recent years have proclaimed that over 40% of all insect species are in decline, and many approach extinction. But are these numbers correct? Is the reality better, or even much worse, than we think?

Entomologist, broadcaster, and author Professor Adam Hart leads a panel debate of international insect experts to discuss these headlines, crunch the numbers and analyse the fact and fiction behind global insect extinction.

Join Adam alongside National Museums Scotland entomology collection curator Ashleigh Whiffin, insect decline ecologist Dr Manu Saunders, and biodiversity specialist Dr Nick Isaac to find out the latest on this contentious and vital issue and ask your questions to the panel.

Organised by the British Ecological Society in association with the Royal Entomological Society for celebrating ‘Insect Week’

    Our panel:
Adam Hart is an entomologist, Trustee of the Royal Entomological Society, and Professor of Science Communication at the University of Gloucestershire. As well as research and teaching, he is a regular broadcaster for BBC Radio 4 and the BBC World Service, presenting documentaries on topics from trophy hunting to tree diseases. He has also presented the weekly science program Science in Action for the BBC World Service. On television, Adam has co-presented several documentary series, most notably BBC4’s Planet Ant and BBC2’s Hive Alive. Adam is also an author of many popular science books, including ‘Unfit for Purpose: when human evolution collides with the modern world’

Dr Nick Isaac is a macroecologist at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. His research team develops methods for the analysis of biodiversity data, including for unstructured occurrence records and for biodiversity indicators. His research describes trends in biodiversity and investigates the causes of these trends, mostly using data on UK invertebrates.

Ashleigh Whiffin is Assistant Curator of Entomology at National Museums Scotland, responsible for the care and development of the insect collection, containing approximately 2.5 million specimens. Her research focuses around carrion ecology, specialising on Carrion Beetles (which are vital for the decomposition of vertebrate remains), for which she also co-organises a National Recording Scheme for. She works closely with several entomological groups to promote her subject, including working with the Royal Entomological Society’s Outreach & Development committee and is the current Chair of Edinburgh Entomological Club; and internationally, she is co-communications officer for the Entomological Collections Network.

Dr Manu Saunders is a Lecturer in Ecology at the University of New England, Armidale, Australia. Manu has published critical articles about the widely reported ‘insect apocalypse’. Her research focuses largely on how insects create links between habitats and people, and how land use changes and agricultural management influences biodiversity and ecosystem processes at local and landscape scales. Manu is also a science communicator, and founder of ‘Wild Pollinator Count’, a non-profit organisation promoting evidence-based conservation of native pollinator insects across Oceania.

The British Ecological Society is broadcasting free online talks on the latest ecological research throughout Spring 2021. Sponsored by Oxford University Press

Jason M. Tylianakis of University of Canterbury, New Zealand presents his talk 'Unravelling the web of life: species interactions in a changing world'

Global environmental changes are driving species extinctions, which can influence ecosystem functioning. Many ecosystem processes involve interactions among many different species within a community, and these networks of interactions may be disrupted long before the species involved go extinct.

"I’ll show how methods such as resource partitioning and trait matching can provide understanding of how network structure influences ecosystem functioning. Unfortunately, interaction networks can propagate environmental change effects across landscapes, but these influences may be predictable."

These talks are aimed at anyone with an interest in the latest research in ecology and its applications, from undergraduates to working ecologists and research leaders. 302-Gruttoleven bij Fryslân DOK

  • Omrop TIP: Gruttoleven bij Fryslân DOK
    13 mrt 2021 - 10:06 Frysk
    https://www.omropfryslan.nl/nieuws/1040826-omrop-tip-gruttoleven-bij-fryslan-dok

    Broedmachine

    https://www.omropfryslan.nl/utstjoering/fryslandok-fan-15-maaie-2022-1700
    Boer Brussel Beweging

      https://vimeo.com/674471297
Learn about the devastating disease threatening Manitoba's bats and how you can help in this CPAWS webinar with Dr. Craig Willis.

In 2006, a microscopic fungus arrived in North America causing white-nose syndrome, a devastating fungal disease in bats, and one of the most drastic declines ever observed in an animal group.

Since then, white-nose syndrome has killed tens of millions of bats. Mortality rates reached 100 per cent in some caves. And three species are now listed as endangered in Canada, including the little brown bat, previously the most abundant and widespread bat species in North America.

Join us for a CPAWS Manitoba webinar with Dr. Craig Willis, Professor of Biology at the University of Winnipeg, whose bat lab has been studying white-nose syndrome for more than 15 years. He discusses the dangers of white-nose syndrome to Manitoba’s bats, the research being done to identify, protect, and improve critical bat habitats, and how you can get involved in monitoring bat populations in Manitoba.

      About the speaker

Dr. Craig Willis is a Professor of Biology at the University of Winnipeg who has been studying the behaviour, ecology, and physiology of bats for over 20 years. His research on bats and white-nose syndrome has been covered by a range of national and international media including CBC's 'The Current' and 'Quirks and Quarks', CTV National News, the Guardian (UK), and the Los Angeles Times.

      How can we help?

    1. Over 40 data portals containing biodiversity specimen and observational data are based on the open source software Symbiota (https://symbiota.org/). These portals function not only as content management systems for digitizing collections, but also as mid-scale data regional or taxonomic aggregators that can be powerful resources for research and education. Several tools in these portals empower research and educational use of their data, including (1) checklist and (2) dataset creation features, (3) trait coding tools, and various (4) search and (5) download options. In this workshop, we will tour the current landscape of data available in Symbiota-based portals, and we will demonstrate the aforementioned tools and showcase how existing portals are being used for research and educational purposes.

    2. As the number of digitized specimen records continues to increase and attention turns toward connecting data sources and the digital extended specimen, the issue of data quality looms large. Although an error in an online data source may be easy to spot, correcting it may be complex, entangling both social and technical issues. In this Discussion Session, we will hear perspectives from data providers, data managers, data users, and cyberinfrastructure experts on a broad range of topics related to data quality: What types of errors are commonly detected? How should potential errors be flagged? Who should correct the errors? What is the community’s role in the process? What annotation tools are needed? How should annotations be tracked and attributed to individuals and institutions? What data enhancements are desirable? What trade-offs between improved data and occasional introduced errors is the community willing to accept? How do we prevent the perpetuation of erroneous records as data sets are published and reused and digital extended specimens are generated? Join the Discussion and share your views
    3. The rapid growth and increasing quantities of digital data from life science and environmental domains have encouraged the use of data in new and holistic ways. Against this backdrop, the principles of Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) data are reshaping how we think about configuring, accessing, linking, and using digital data in transparent, open, and collaborative ways to uncover previously undiscoverable relationships. Recent initiatives in the US and Europe envision a collective representation on the Internet of all related digital assets that meet the principles of FAIR and that are distinguished and linked using globally unique, persistent, and resolvable identifiers to create an extensive online network of knowledge. In this session, we will have a series of talks that highlight current efforts and initiatives to democratize data, facilitate cross-domain discovery, and foster fully integrated and interoperable research with biodiversity data. This will be followed by a community discussion among members of the wide range of biodiversity data stakeholders that will illuminate the pathway toward the standards-based infrastructure needed to support a FAIR and open biodiversity data model, and define the shared values that will expand and sustain it.

    20. The monarchs’ history is lengthy, and details are few, but it’s clear that this species has survived an extremely variable climatic history.

The pending petition before the Department of Interior to declare the monarch butterfly a threatened species requires that we do everything we can to understand the population dynamics of this species.
The responses of monarchs to weather events in the last two decades provide insights as to both the size of past and future monarch populations. This population dynamic has played out against a background of human-driven changes in habitats across the landscapes of eastern North America and Mexico. Unfortunately, landscapes that support monarchs are continuing to decline rapidly as a result of agricultural practices, development, and warming climates. These changes not only involve the loss of milkweeds and nectar sources needed to sustain reproduction and migration but extend to the persistence of the forests in Mexico that sustain the overwintering population. Will the monarch migration become a victim of climate change? Probably. Can we keep this from happening? Yes.

Chip Taylor is the Founder and Director of Monarch Watch, and an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Kansas. Trained as an insect ecologist at the University of Connecticut, his research projects have included studies of reproductive isolating mechanisms in sulfur butterflies, reproductive and life history patterns in plants, comparative biology of European and Neotropical African honey bees and migratory behavior of monarch butterflies. In 1974, Chip Taylor established research sites and directed students studying Neotropical African honey bees (killer bees) in French Guiana, Venezuela, and Mexico. In 1992, Taylor founded Monarch Watch, an outreach program focused on education, research, and conservation relative to monarch butterflies. Since then, Monarch Watch has enlisted the help of volunteers to tag monarchs during the fall migration. Over 2 million monarchs have been tagged by volunteers since 1992. Of these, over nineteen thousand have been recovered. This program has provided many new insights into the dynamics of the fall monarch migration.

      https://www.naturetoday.com/intl/nl/nature-reports/message/?msg=29209

vertellen over fylogenetische boomstructuur.
      stamboom.

304-Perspectives in machine learning for wildlife conservation

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-022-27980-y here is a mismatch between the ever-growing volume of raw measures (videos, images, audio recordings) acquired for ecological studies and our ability to process and analyze this multi-source data to derive conclusive ecological insights rapidly and at scale. Effectively, ecology has entered the age of big data and is increasingly reliant on sensors, advanced methodologies, and computational resources26. Central challenges to efficient data analysis are the sheer volume of data generated by modern collection methods and the heterogeneous nature of many ecological datasets, which preclude the use of simple automated analysis techniques26. Crowdsourcing platforms like eMammal (emammal.si.edu), Agouti (agouti.eu), and Zooniverse (www.zooniverse.org) function as collaborative portals to collect data from different projects and provide tools to volunteers to annotate images, e.g., with species labels of the individuals therein. Such platforms drastically reduce the cost of data processing (e.g., ref. 27 reports a reduction of seventy thousand dollars), but the rapid increase in the volume and velocity of data collection is making such approaches unsustainable. For example, in August 2021 the platform Agouti hosted 31 million images, of which only 1.5 million were annotated. This is mostly due to the manual nature of the current annotation tool, which requires human review of every image. In other words, methods for automatic cataloging, searching, and converting data into relevant information are urgently needed and have the potential to broaden and enhance animal ecology and wildlife conservation in scale and accuracy, address prevalent challenges, and pave the way forward towards new, integrated research directives. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-022-27980-y

Around 21% of the EU’s total surface area is covered by grassland, which makes grassland management a relevant activity for the maintenance of agroecosystems and rural economies. However, most of this resource is mostly left unused. To unlock this potential, the Horizon 2020 GO-GRASS project is supporting the production of sustainable grass-based products replacing existing fossil-based alternatives, such as fertilisers or plastic-packaging.
      https://www.go-grass.eu/nl/eu-greenweek-we-are-hosting-a-partner-event/
At the occasion of the EU Green Week 2022, which focuses on the European Green Deal, the GO-GRASS project will shed light on how increased grasslands and carbon sequestration are delivering benefits for biodiversity, climate neutrality, circular economy and water quality.
This online event will present practices and resources that can foster the deployment of carbon farming linked to sustainable grassland management practices and circular agro-food systems in Europe.
      https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_x6vb2D6WSYmCZ_kJhBcDVg
The event will provide a chance for entrepreneurs, farmer organisations, policy makers, researchers, rural networks and other European and local stakeholders, to discover circular grass-based business models with high replication potential and solutions for carbon removals.
