Nature Walk 3: Plants

I was able to complete this nature walk during fall break in my home town. I did this nature walk at Burnt Hill Park and some of the surrounding streets. Although I have been going to this park since I was about 7 years old to play soccer, there were quite a few things that I had never noticed before. This nature walk allowed me to explore more of this park than ever before and truly appreciate all of the beauty that it had to offer. The weather was perfect, about 60 degrees and sunny, with a slight breeze. I got to see a great deal of biodiversity within the park. All of the leaves were changing colors and many of the plants were in full bloom. There was a wide variety of plants ranging from nonvascular to vascular to flowering. I got to observe trees with their leaves changing colors and the goldenrods in full bloom, as well as some ferns and other types of plants.

Nature Walk 2: The Reservoir

On this nature walk, I chose to walk around the infamous Reservoir across from Boston College. Rather than taking this walk alone, as I did last time, I chose to go with two of my good friends. It gave us a chance to get away from the classroom and spend time chatting about anything and everything. The weather was beautiful on Wednesday, when I did my nature walk, and it was great to see so many people and organisms out by the Reservoir. I observed a lot of different plants and animals. I found the diversity of the plants to be incredible. While there were some plants that I had seen before, many of them I only noticed along this nature walk. It was incredibly fascinating to look at the various animals as well. I got to see a great deal of ducks as well as a couple of swans, which was awesome!

Nature Walk 1: The Newton Woods

For this nature walk, I took a trip through the Newton Woods located on the Newton Campus of Boston College. Although I had been there one or twice before, on this visit I took the time to observe the true beauty that is hidden within those woods. There was a great deal of biodiversity there, and everywhere I looked, was some type of wildlife. While I had heard rumors of coyotes in the woods, I luckily did not come across any. Instead, I ran into some dog walkers and got to know their dogs. The weather for this trip was very nice, about 70 degrees. I began the walk around 5:30, but as time progressed and it got darker I had to find my way out, which is fairly difficult in those woods. It is very easy to get lost in the Newton Woods, as I do not know them very well and many of the paths look the same. I saw a lot of green plants and leaves everywhere, and there were squirrels scurrying about. I found it difficult to capture pictures of animals because they move at a fast pace. Overall, I am glad I was able to develop a new appreciation for those woods and examine the biodiversity within them.
