Not meant as a real "observation", of course - but I thought some fellow herpetologically-oriented iNaturalists might enjoy seeing this amazing life-sized model of this 45 foot, long-extinct ancestor of modern-day Boas feeding upon an adult Crocodile. Educational exhibit at the NJ Fossil, Gem, and Mineral Show, held at the Raritan Center Expo Hall in Edison, NJ. Kids attending the show were absolutely smitten with the sight of this huge, plastic reptile - exhibit staff were constantly trying to stop them from trying to "ride" it!

Me and my bud "Gooey" (the earthworm, haha!) crashed a "Plethodon Party" in an overgrown vacant lot down the block from me - 5 individuals of both phases/different growth stages hanging out beneath a piece of old plywood. Always fun seeing these little guys! Vicinity of Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Citified little serpent out for a "sidewalk slither" in downtown Perth Amboy, NJ. Put him in my pocket and released him in an overgrown vacant lot a few blocks down, before somebody ignorant as to the harmless and gentle beauty of this species ruined it's day. : )

Hooray! Snakes are finally out in Central Jersey! Decent-sized female (14") found beneath a "sucker board" I placed in my garden a couple years ago. High hopes in 2019 to see some other species on my "wish list" - like the Norway Rat (Rattus norvegicus), American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana), Cabbage White Butterfly (Pieris rapae), and of course, everybody's "dream" bird species - the nearly-mythical European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris), hahaha! But in all seriousness, I never tire of seeing these softly beautiful, gentle, and amazingly adaptable snakes in the field. I've seen uncounted specimens of Storeria dekayi since I found my very first one in 1967 when I was in 2nd Grade, and finding them still never fails to bring a smile to my face!

Found this beautiful girl hanging out in my little basement greenhouse/insectary/"man-cave" last night. I didn't want her to eat all the House Centipedes running around in there, haha - so after cooperating nicely for a few photos, she was relocated to an her new "palace grounds" (a bug-laden, overgrown woodpile in my backyard).

Gravid female observed during a presence/absence survey for NJ State Endangered and Threatened species on a large private land holding. This particular tract of land was bordered to the Northwest by a large State Forest, and encompassed some amazing habitat for this species - see additional photos. The environmentally-minded property owner was thrilled at the discovery - must be nice to have your "very own" Timber den, right? : )

Hooray! Spring has finally sprung in New Jersey! 1st herp of the year, found under a "sucker board" near my garden mulch pile. I've found uncountable individuals of this hardy, adaptable, and extraordinarily common species over the years (since I was in Kindergarten!) - and every one I uncover still brings a smile to my face!

Lousy photo of a very interesting behavior observed during a presence/absence survey for this State Threatened species in Stafford Township, NJ. I came upon this young adult Northern Pine Snake after it had just excavated the burrow of an Eastern Mole (Scalopus aquaticus) - and was suffocating one of the luckless inhabitants by pressing it up against the wall of it's own tunnel! I didn't want to get any closer and possibly disturb the snake during it's hard-won feast, but the Mole (not visible) is pinned against the tunnel wall by the second coil (I had to peek!) haha!

Young adult female, vicinity of the Watchung Reservation nature reserve. Rarely encountered at this location, which represents the extreme southern range limit for the species in New Jersey. Agkistrodon contortrix is not known to occur south of this point along the Atlantic Coast for nearly 300 miles - until re-appearing near the southern tip of the Delmarva Peninsula.

The Watchung Reservation is a small stronghold for this NJ State Threatened species, in a sea of surrounding urban development. I hadn't been to this wonderful natural preserve in more than 15 years, despite it being within 20 miles of my home - and was relieved to find the area largely unchanged, and the small local population of these beautiful and intelligent turtles still healthy and "hanging in there".

One of several larvae observed in a small, spring-fed impoundment locally called "Hermit's Pond", in the deserted village of Feltville, Watchung Reservation, Mountainside, NJ. Also observed the interesting behavior of a large P. ruber larva actively "stalking" the smaller Eurycea larvae in the crystal-clear water of the pool.
