Common but very attractive damselfly. This species along with Hetaerina americana were the two I saw the most of on the trip.

Teneral male Argia translata after complicated emergence

He was clinging to this plant in the middle a fast-flowing stream while strong winds pulled the plant around.

Very windy day...tough day for emergence. I saw two other teneral A. translata and one male Enallagma basidens that had injuries either inspired by or exacerbated by the wind.

Likely more as scavengers than predators capable of felling a damselfly. These creatures are frequently on any other dead or almost dead organisms atop the pond's surface.

The damselfly likely had complications emerging or an early injury from something (as opposed to being subdued and predated by this gerrid).

As this damselfly landed the spider near the end of the his abdomen rapidly crawled from the underside of the rock. The spider seemed to quickly assess the damselfly was not an appropriate target. Though it didn't attempt capture the damselfly he stayed out next to the damsel.

The damselfly likely emerged during the prior few days when the rock was above water. It since rained which raised the water level.

Interesting to see how the grip still clung to the rock--the current was fairly strong.

While I was walking to look for Argia cuprea a familiar vehicle passed by and it happened to be Terry Hibbits. We chatted for a bit and agreed to meet up after lunch and go explore some.

I found this female A. barretti about 10 minutes after I had told him I was hoping to see one as I didn't see any the last time out.

I saw what looked like a trodden path that led under an overpass and to a creek that looked like an offshoot of the San Antonio River. After walking as far as the "path" went I wandered on a bit in vegetation a little over knee-high.

I was mostly watching for snakes by my feet and when I paused a minute to reevaluate my course of action, I glanced up and froze when I saw this snack at about waist height. I couldn't believe how long it was, probably more than three feet, though still having a thin circumference. I only got one tight shot before I broke the frozen eye-contact and the snake descended into the brush.

This was the most commonly seen Argia species during the visit. A. apicalis was also present but much less prolific. As well I saw a single A. sedula of each gender (though there were undoubtedly more).
