Arigomphus submedianus in copula

I unknowingly walked right by these two and scared them which caused them to flee, in turn scaring the hell out of me as they almost clipped my head. Thankfully I was able to catch up with them for a little while.

I went back and forth between photographing them and other nearby insects for 15 minutes or so and the entire time the male appeared to be removing sperm. Unfortunately for him, I also scared them again by getting too close and they separated. So unless he caught up with her later he essentially helped with easing the propagation of another male's DNA.

I felt really bad as an accidental participant in this sequence of events.

Female Epitheca princeps (with part of exuvial labial mask still present)

I took a walk on lunch and saw this baskettail and at the time thought she must've been stunned/killed while ovipositing by a fish or duck. I took a few shots but didn't investigate further as nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

Upon closer inspection it seems the dragonfly has retained part of the exuviae on its face (see second photo). I returned in the late afternoon when I got a chance hoping to pick her up out of the water and see if more of the exuviae was present/she didn't totally complete ecdysis. Unfortunately the dragonfly was gone and I as I walked around the entire pond I suspected a duck had plucked her up, forever sealing this as one of the great mysteries of all time. ;)

It would've made more sense if some emerging complication rendered this mostly externally physically sound more likely to expire early. She could've also just gotten trapped in the water and died of exhaustion or overheating.

Vespid prey with male Promachus bastardii

Observation is for the prey.

I saw the asilid capture then subdue the prey mid-air. They both hovered in the same place (the asilid carrying the vespid) while the asilid maneuvered the vespid's orientation and found an appropriate softer area apically on the pronotum (see second, third photos).

It appears mid to late June (look at "Date observed" column) is a great time for this species locally:

Male Enallagma basidens with hydrachnid mites

This male appeared out of place, as did its behavior. I watched him for a minute and he was not translocating sperm or engaging in typical grooming with his legs. He seemed to move slower than normal, almost as though the ambient temperature was much lower.

Cannot say for sure that there was an intentionality to remove the mites though it did seem the motion was there.

Though it seems obvious, I'm not sure what was going on or what the root of the behavior was.

I was looking at the damselfly through the viewfinder of the camera and saw this spider climbing up the leaf. For a very brief moment I wondered if it was going to attack the damselfly.

This species was abundant along the edges of the muddy ponds that had flooded from the recent storms.

A good deal of vegetation on the downstream margin of the pond had been displaced, lifted out of the water, drying near the shoreline. Surely those clumps of vegetation (mostly Alternanthera philoxeroides) housed some eggs or nymphs that had been laid so far this year.

I was wondering if there is some release mechanism/behavior when the rate of water exceeds a certain value or if the inhabitants in such floods are just doomed.

I was knelt on the ground taking a shot of this female and I turned my head to the left to look at something. When I turned my head to take more shots of the female there was another dragonfly in the background. It was a male of the same species.

The distance between them was small but too great for me to get both of them in focus with the lens I was using.

I saw this creature crawling up a mesquite tree (I think...) and instantly froze. I could not believe how big it was and how fast it was moving.

I quickly disengaged my camera from the tripod and attempted to get a full body shot. As I got closer it quickly became apparent that he was well aware of and uncomfortable with my proximity.

For reference I tried to put my thumb near him and get a shot but he jumped and then scurried farther. Despite not wanting to interrupt him more I decided to catch him and take some closer shots. I tried to gently coax him off the tree but his grip was extremely impressive and I almost abandoned my attempt because I was afraid one of our arms might break off.

In the end, obviously, I succeeded, otherwise I'd be too embarrassed to post this, and I took some crappy reference shots with my phone and then tried to put him back in a relevant place.

Toxomerus marginatus mating in flight

Annika and I agreed that we had both seen this species mating numerous times but never mating in flight.

Only the male's wings were moving and he seemed to be generally steering them in the shade. We watched them for a few minutes during which they never landed or exited a perimeter more than 18"2 or so.
