These images were taken from a compound light microscope slide of pond water taken from the shaded region of Castor pond at USF. These organisms interacted very interestingly, by linking their flagella together. There were about 8 of these vorticellae in this particular slide sample.

This bird was found next to Castor pond nearby a white egret. The bird was blue/grey in color and was approximately 1.5feet tall. I’ve seen other great blue herons near Castor pond and elsewhere on the USF campus, so I believe this to also be one.

This organism is a red maple found in a dense trail at USF Riverfront Park. I originally thought this organism was some sort of vine or ivy because of it’s thin stem, but after comparing it to photos of red maples and identifiable vines in the area, I determined it was a red maple. The maple was really thin and about 5 feet tall. These photos were taken in approximately 60° sunny weather.

This organism was a pondhawk/dragonfly found at USF Riverfront Park. I chose eastern pondhawk rather than greater pondhawk because of the distinct, bold black markings it had along its thorax and abdomen. The weather was sunny and the temperature was approximately 60°.

This organism is a bald cypress found at USF Riverfront Park. There were a lot of these types of trees and their knees in the river. This photo was taken in early Spring in Florida on a sunny day following some rain the day before. The temperature was about 60°. The tree was probably about 15-20 feet tall.

This organism was a light green/white lichen growing on the side of a wooden dock at USF Riverfront Park. These pictures were taken close to sunset and in 60° weather. There were a lot of these lichens on the side of the dock, as well as on some nearby trees. However, there weren’t a lot of these lichens on other trees or wood, just on the dock and a couple cypress trees.

These ferns were growing on the side of a live-oak tree at USF Riverfront Park. These photos were taken during late-afternoon and in approximately 60° weather. There were a lot of these ferns growing on this tree and different trees, but the one in the photo was the most significant growth I saw at about 2 feet by 1 foot.

These were found on a trail at USF Riverfront Park near sunset and in 60° weather. These were some of the only flowers I found of this nature at the park, but they were growing on a bush together right off the trail under a lot of oak trees and conifers.

This organism was found at USF Riverfront Park late-afternoon on a sunny day with a temperature of about 60°. I’m not sure if this is a pennywort species or Nasturtium, but each round leaf had white, star-like veins. There were a lot of these growing around the river.

Found at USF’s Riverfront Park on a sunny day with a temperature of about 61°. There were a lot of clusters of these flowers found with some other white flowers of a different species. These were growing on the banks of a river and in St. Augustine grass.

This bird was found by Castor pond at USF on a sunny day following some rain. The bird was very large, and was approximately 2-3 feet tall, with white feathers and a yellow beak, which lead me to believe that it was an egret and not a heron.

Found on a bush outside Juniper Hall at around 6pm. It was approximately 75°F and it was sunny outside. I originally assumed the organism was a honeybee, but I realized it was a yellow-jacket when it became unnecessarily aggressive. It was about 1/3 in long, and the thicker stripes on its abdomen and its aggressive behavior led me to the conclusion that it was a yellowjacket rather than a paper wasp.
