This was a tiny example of the species. As I watched it flight from frogfruit to frogfruit, I thought I might be looking at a Western Pygmy Blue. The photos reveal otherwise.

It was difficult finding even a little bit of Straggler Daisy in bloom to tally an August blooming record. While the species is abundant all around the neighborhood, and a recent rain shower had freshened up all the wilted Straggler Daisy, almost none of it is in bloom. I found a small handful of plants still blooming along a greenbelt trail where runoff from a nearby street had kept the plants fairly fresh and growing through very droughty July.

Just getting around to uploading the last images I took during National Moth Week. I think the final tally was a paltry 50 species of moths documented over the eight evenings--pretty low diversity for this region. Things did pick up later in the week but it started off slow and ended slow.

This Thin-banded Owlet was a different individual than one I'd documented the previous night:

This late instar Gray Hairstreak was feeding on the flower clusters of a carrot plant (literally, a cultivated carrot) that I was growing from cut scraps from the kitchen. I couldn't find the caterpillar the next day and I suspect it was ready to pupate. The very same plant had hosted a Variegated Cutworm earlier in the Spring: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/45693156

I'm uploading this image as much for the weather note as for the bird in the pic. The thermometer in the trail cam seems to be fairly accurate compared to a nearby one on the back porch. 106F.

Still common in the yard but not as abundant this Summer as in some past years. I have not had to trap and relocate any this year.

We're into that late summer time when some of the N. Cardinals look really funky in post-breeding molt. This is an adult female.

This was the only image of a Lesser Goldfinch that my trail cam captured in July. I think goldfinches are just so small that they don't trigger the shutter on this particular camera. The species is around the yard (and at the bath) every day.

A rare image of one of our Armadillo's wandering around in the early morning. Most of our trail cam images of this species are at night.

Just barely documented in July, despite being abundant in the yard every day. I have to study my trail camera and tweek the settings to capture these small birds.

No BCTI chose to pose properly for an image at the bird bath this month. This is the best I could do. (Also, this is another small bird that doesn't trigger the camera very often even though the species is abundant in the yard all day every day.

This was a pretty cute moment. The family of Rock Squirrels in the back yard have successfully raised three youngsters. All three were up on the back deck munching on potted plants. One was sampling Portulaca, another was eating carrot greens and flowers, and the third had settled into a big flower pot in which a volunteer patch of Straggler Daisy provided a big salad. We didn't mind them at all munching on these particular plants. The only downside was that one of the little buggers took a bite out of the stem of one of my two Avocado trees growing in pots and "felled" it. :-(

A post-breeding dispersal flock of Common Grackles has been wandering around in the neighborhood this past week. They descended on my bird feeders one afternoon. The flock numbers about 6 to 12 individuals at any given moment.
