HYMENOPTERA: Winged insects, two pairs of wings, fore wings and hind wings similar in texture and structure, wings largely transparent, mouthparts not a piercing-sucking beak and situated at the front of the head, antennae conspicuous, wings with few veins and cross veins with larger cells, tarsi 5-segmented, fore wings larger than hind wings, abdomen constricted at base.

ICHNEUMONIDAE: Base of abdomen constricted, hind wings with 2 or fewer closed basal cells (suborder Apocrita), first abdominal segments without hump on node, antennae variable, wings fully developed, pronotum reaching back to tegula, venation complete or nearly so, fore wings with 6 or more closed cells and hind wings with at least one closed cell. Hind trochanters two-segmented, antennae with 14+ segments, fore wing with two recurrent veins, first submarginal and first discoidal cells confluent.

COLEOPTERA: Winged insects, with two pairs of wings not membranous, fore wings hard and horny in texture, meeting in a straight line and concealing membranous hind wings, abdomen without forceps-like cerci.

POLYPHAGA: Prothorax without visible notopleural sutures, hind coxae moveable, not fused with metasternum and not dividing basal abdominal sternite into two lateral pieces, hind trochanters without jelly beans - posterior lateral extensions.

SCARABAEIDAE: Antennae with 3-8 distal segments very asymmetrically expanded, forming a well defined, one-sided, often lamellate club, front legs adapted for digging, the fore tibia flattened with teeth on the outer edge. Segments of antennal club thin, abdomen with six visible sternites.

MELOLONTHINAE: Labrum sclerotized, exposed, antennal club more than 3 segments, tarsal claws toothed at base.

Costelytra: Metasternal process absent, brown colour, metasternum longer than mesosternum, sternal surfaces with long silky hairs, alternate elytral intervals very narrow, non-punctate and raised as distinct ridges.

NEUROPTERA: Winged insects, two pairs of wings, fore wings and hind wings similar in texture and structure, wings largely transparent, mouthparts not a piercing-sucking beak and situated at the front of the head, antennae conspicuous, wings with many veins and cross veins in a net-like arrangement, hind tarsi with three segments, wings transparent and not covered with hair, wings with a dense margin of bifurcating veins, hind wing narrower, wide as fore wing at base.

HEMEROBIIDAE: Costal area with numerous cross veins and more or less defined pterostigma. Nygmata absent, small species, fore wing length <10mm with long thin bodies, smaller lacewing like species, antennae not clubbed, many cross veins fork before reaching front end of wing, radial veins of fore wing arising on more than 2 stems, brownish hairy species.

HEMIPTERA: Winged insects, two pairs of wings, fore wings and hind wings similar in texture, wings largely transparent, mouthparts a piercing-sucking beak on bottom of the head, resting on underside of body between legs.

STERNORRHYNCHA & AUCHENORRHYNCHA/Suborder HOMOPTERA: Fore wings uniform in texture, without sharp differentiation into a basal sclerotized corium and an apical membrane, held roof-wise over the body, insertion of labium close to prosternum.

Suborder AUCHENORRHYNCHA: Tarsi with 3 segments

CICADIDAE: Mid coxae short and not widely separated. Pedical of antennae not thicker than scape, without wart-like sensilla. 3 ocelli on top of head, fore femora thickened.

BLATTIDAE: All femora with series of stout spurs on posterior lateral margins, tibial spurs. Male (presence of cerci and genital styles at end of abdomen) with subgenital plate symmetrical, hind edge more or less straight.

Celatoblatta: Non-uniformly coloured, dorsum of thoracic segments with a pale margin, smooth and shiny. Medium brown with dark markings and a narrow pale border on the thoracic segments; hind margin of male subgenital plate more or less straight.

ODONATA: Winged insects, two pairs of wings, fore wings and hind wings similar in texture and structure, wings largely transparent, mouthparts not a piercing-sucking beak and situated at the front of the head, antennae small and bristle-like, fore wing and hind wing nearly equal in size, tip of abdomen without terminal filaments.

ZYGOPTERA: Medium-sized insects. Eyes widely separated. Fore and hind wings similar in shape; petiolate (stemmed).

COENAGRIONIDA: Pterostigma diamond-shaped, approx. as long as deep, costal and distal margins subequal, costal margin much longer than hind margin. Body length less than 41mm.

Xanthocnemis spp: Yellowish line on mesepisternum broad and with a distinct notch in the lateral border. Body length 30mm.
