Not great photos I admit but this bird was buff brown, foraging alone with a very long beak. Seen wandering on the soccer field in Moorpark.

Based on the size of this bird I think this is a sharp-shinned Hawk rather than the more commonly observed Cooper’s Hawk in my neighbourhood. Definitely closer in size to a kestrel. Unfortunately seemed to have caught either a house finch or oak titmouse. Included the last photo in an attempt to show scale. Hawk is behind the fire pit by the fence.

I think this is a Cooper’s hawk but only photos from this angle. It had just attacked and killed a California scrub jay.

I’m a novice birder and struggling to identify this bird who was hunting over the hill behind my garden. Is it a juvenile red-tailed hawk or is it a northern harrier as they have also been seen in the area. In some of the photos (which I wish were better) you can see something hanging from its leg. Probably a twig but it did make me wonder if it was a jess. Just a thought...

Any suggestions appreciated. I've cropped and zoomed these two photos to try to get as much detail as possible. Smallish bird not as big as an oriole, probably similar in size to a house finch.
