I first noticed flowers of Thismia rodwayi on 4 November. When this photo was taken those flowers had dried out and more fresh flowers had appeared. We found approximately 20 flowers in the area.

Extensive fruiting of stalked sporangia 1.4-1.9 mm tall. Sporotheca very dark; stalk longitudinally grooved, red, shiny; Peridium dark, splitting into petaloid lobes. Capillitium rusty red in mass, red by transmtted light, unbranched with smooth spiral bands and gradually tapering ends, 4-5 microns diameter. Spores rusy red in mass, orange red by transmitted light, minutely spiny, 10 microns diameter.

Descripción

Widely scattered tufts (between 3 and many sporangia) of stalked sporangia to 6 mm high, pale lilac brown. Sporotheca sub-cylindrical, slightly tapering at apex; rounded at apex and base, 2.7 mm long x 0.3–0.4 mm diameter. Stalk black, shiny, 0.4–1.5 mm long; black and with reticulate fibers at base when viewed by transmitted light. Hypothallus continuous under groups, membranous, brown and shiny. Peridium fugacious. Columella reaches to below apex of sporotheca where it branches. Capillitium attached to entire length of columella, about 5 meshes across radius, reddish brown; surface net angular with numerous free ends. Spores pale lilac brown in mass, pale by transmitted light, reticulate pattern of faint large meshes between small dark meshes, 6–7 µm.
Note: colour and size makes this a distinctive species in the field. This collection has numerous free ends on the surface net in contrast to another of my collections which has no fee ends. (N.E. Nannenga-Bremekamp states that ‘meshes sometimes almost smooth, sometimes with thorns’.) The reticulate pattern on the spores is distinctive.

Pseudoaethalium dark brown when mature covered in dried white slime, 70 mm long x 90 mm wide x 10 mm high. Sporothecae closely packed, sinuous, with convex tips, 0.4–0.6 mm diameter. Hypothallus white at first becoming reddish brown. Peridium light brown in reflected light with golden and blue iridescence; circular patterns seen with oil immersion lens. Spores light brown in mass, pale by transmitted light, banded-reticulate, 6 µm.
Notes Immature pseudoaethalium first orange, then coral red then chocolate brown.

Descripción

Pseudoaethalia of closely packed sporothecae, more or less round in outline, 12 mm long x 15 mm wide x 4 mm high, brown. Sporothecae cylindrical straight-sided tubules, angular by mutual pressure. Tips of sporothecae 0.5–0.6 mm diameter, hexagonal, flat to slightly convex, equal in height so forming a smooth surface of the pseudoaethalium. Hypothallus inconspicuous. Peridium brown, slightly iridescent, circular pattern seen with oil immersion lens. Spores reddish brown in mass, brown by transmitted light, banded reticulate, 6 µm. Immature pseudoaethalia were pale pinkish brown.
