I came to botany through the practice of Chinese medicine.

I wrote a thesis comparing Chinese Scutellaria species to the same species gown domestically. I expended a lot of energy trying to figure out how to grow Chinese species domestically that would yield high quality medicinal materials. At some point, my study expanded to include North American plants that were used medicinally.

Not surprisingly, my major interest is in studying North American species from genus that have important analogs in the practice of Chinese medicine such as Astragalus, Salvia, Scutellaria, Aconitum and Lilium. In addition and by extension I am also interested more generally in plants from families that frequently produce progeny with histories of use as medicinal plants such as Apiaceae, Scrophulaceae, Plantaginaceae and Orobanchaceae. So pretty much all I see are the herbaceous plants.

I'm working on my conifer game.
