Hi everyone!
Week four. If you're still here, give yourself a pat on the back.
Remember, slow and steady -- this is a marathon, not a race. Take breaks, drink plenty of water, and stand up and stretch periodically. You can do it!
First of all, Total% ... what have we done together, in this short span of time?
56 people have made a total of 13989 IDs!
Over the span of the entire competition, that's 85645 IDs! Wow!
NOTE: I mistakenly said last week that @ddbois2 had maxed out his prize limit. That wasn't actually true; I miss counted and he is allowed to receive this prize but no more after this.

Nearing the halfway point! Five more weeks to go!
If you are one of the top 4 in any category, you win an exclusive, 1-on-1 lesson with me (תכלת aka trh_blue) on how to correctly pronounce my first name. In no time, you will be able to say it like a real Israeli -- or better, like an Israeli who happens to be extremely pedantic about the correct grammar and pronunciation of ancient Biblical Hebrew. I can attempt to give a lesson through text only, but voice chat is recommended, obviously. PM me if you're actually curious lol
The hint for next week's Mystery% is:
Who needs research grade?

Hmmmm, no links for the complete rankings? Or is it just me?
No you're right, we're slow. I'll work on it now.
Curious: What is "Old%"?
Aargh, I worked so hard and I only got 20th?!
Old% isn't actually a percent, it's a count of how many IDs you've put on observations created on or before Dec 31 2015.
@sedgequeen Old% is "Most IDs on observations over 5 years old".
@fluffyinca are you adding IDs on things created before Oct 1st 2020? I agree that I've seen you make a lot of IDs lately but perhaps they were not on qualifying observations. Now seems like a good time to remind people of the ID-a-thon Rules, which include category definitions: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/2021-jan-feb-id-a-thon/journal/44800-rules-of-the-id-a-thon
🤔and by Old% you are not referring to my (our) age? Birthday is coming up, maybe I'm getting sensitive.
I forgot about the October 2020 limit, but I think my IDs qualified anyway. I've been mostly doing Unknowns, filtering by Ascending or Random.
I've got at least 5 tabs open and moving to the next while one marks reviewed and again to another while View More is refreshed. Three tabs are prior to 2015 Random without certain taxa. One tab is for regional sea life and another is just regional. Gotta mix it up a little.
@fluffyinca I'll double check your numbers by hand as soon as I get finished updating the complete rankings page.

@trh_blue When you have time can you edit the journal post to include this link?
yup I'll do that now. I meant to do that when we talked earlier but totally forgot!
if you weren't feeling old enough yet, do your best to translate this:
"git stonks or get rekt, scrubs!"
@trh_blue Thanks so much for all of your efforts. I am sure I am only seeing the surface of your work. That goes to everyone else as well!
BTW Bought my VIC-20 when I was in my early 20s. My first computer was a slide ruler.
Thanks.
If I'm interpreting the hint correctly... Goldfish ID-a-thon? lol!
I'm fairly (very) sure I know what the hint means.
Last week's hint was probably too difficult to guess, so I thought I'd follow it with something obvious!
I was confused, because I thought last week's Mystery was probably "Most Leading IDs".
It was, actually... but then @trh_blue thought that improving made more sense... Honestly the distinction between leading and improving is confusing to me.
"Leading: Taxon descends from the community taxon. This identification could be leading toward the right answer.
Improving: First suggestion of this taxon that the community subsequently agreed with. This identification helped refine the community taxon."
It seems like they should be reversed, since Leading sounds like "first" and Improving sounds like "better than first".
