One thing movies tell us is that artificial intelligence can’t be trusted, and what better way to celebrate that trope than with an event that celebrates a healthy suspicion of AI? A lot of us simply accept without question the computer-aided suggestions in iNaturalist, but check again! Is the plant suggested even found in that region? Does it match the description in a flora? Join us as we present you with all the tips and tricks to get the best ID suggestion to your ability. Join us and learn how to identify plants on iNaturalist and how you can participate in our Fire Followers Campaign.

Join Andrea Williams, a botanist who can help you get the most out of iNaturalist’s suggestions! Andrea is the director of Biodiversity Initiatives for the California Native Plant Society. Starting off wanting to know what everything was and doing “spot the difference” puzzles as a child led easily to today’s leisure activity of identifying plants on iNaturalist and Calflora. Andrea has two decades of botany experience in public lands management in California, adding over 100 taxa to five local plant lists through observation and community science.

Skynet Challenge

Feeling inspired to put your new knowledge to the test? After our webinar, we will begin our Skynet Challenge, where you will have the opportunity to apply what you learned and help us identify some of the thousands of observations that still need to reach Research Grade.

We encourage you to help others identify their observations, however, starting on Friday, 8/27, our challenge will focus on the most overall improvements and leading identifications. Feel free to check out this list of observations that still need to be ID’d and test your knowledge! The winners will be announced on 9/8. Help identify for a chance to win a Fire Followers shirt!

Here is the link to the identification page for our project: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?iconic_taxa=Plantae&project_id=california-fire-followers-2020

As of now, there are a total of 14,035 observations that still need to reach RG. Best of luck!
