New Native Trout Challenge Kicks Off in 12 Western States, California Department of Fish and Wildlife Announces.

The 12 states where these native trout can be found are Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. The state fish and wildlife agencies in each of the 12 states are partnering on the effort, along with the U.S. Forest Service, the federal Bureau of Land Management and Trout Unlimited.

Bus-Sized Basking Sharks Spotted In California Waters After 30-Year Absence.

Basking sharks were spotted twice this spring in Santa Monica Bay, California.

Basking sharks are the second-largest sharks in the world, second only to whale sharks.

Once abundant off the West Coast, basking sharks became targeted in the 1960s by fishing and eradication programs.

Hordes of fish killed in Berkeley by firefighting water, foam.

A fierce battle by Berkeley firefighters to prevent a gas-tank explosion succeeded in averting a potential disaster this week — but an apparently deadly aftereffect is that hundreds of fish were killed when water and retardant foam from the firefight flowed into a nearby stream.

A California battle over swordfish — and gill nets.

Conservationists are pushing a $1 million effort this summer to change the way swordfish are caught off the California coast by phasing out the use of gill nets. They are the mile-long nylon nets used to catch swordfish but that also ensnare other species, causing conservation organizations to seek an end to their use.
