Rabies alert: wild fox tests positive in Ukiah.

Rabies is always fatal if not treated. It is carried by a wide variety of wild and domesticated animals and can be transmitted through a bite or by coming in contact with the saliva of an infected animal. Animals infected with rabies may begin to exhibit strange or aggressive behavior. Some behavioral signs of rabies infection include “staggering, restlessness, aggression, a change of the tone of their barks or growls, or choking.”

Bats, skunks, foxes, raccoons, and bobcats are some of the wild animals that commonly carry rabies.

Habitat on the Edges: Making Room for Wildlife in an Urbanized World.

Efforts to protect biodiversity are now focusing less on preserving pristine areas and more on finding room for wildlife on the margins of human development. As urban areas keep expanding, it is increasingly the only way to allow species to survive.

State lifts automatic death sentence for these mountain lions that prey on pets and livestock.

Mountain lions living in genetically fragile populations in Southern California will no longer receive an automatic death sentence when they prey on pets and livestock.

On Tuesday, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife said it was changing its policy for issuing permits to livestock owners in those areas who are seeking to kill mountain lions. Until now, the permits have been automatically issued if the cat has attacked domestic animals. From now on, the applicant must first try at least twice to shoo the cougar away with nonlethal means.

Raccoon ‘latrines’ could have a hidden impact on ecosystems.

A pile of raccoon feces can either be a delicatessen or a death trap. The masked mammals tend to all poop in the same place, and these large mounds of dung contain partially digested seeds that are a treat for some animals, but also contain a roundworm parasite that’s lethal to others. Now, after spending 3 years watching these poop piles, researchers have found that species at risk of dying from the parasite give the latrines a wide berth, whereas those that face only tummy trouble often decide that the allure of seeds is worth it.

California Outdoors: Purpose of the New Elk Management Plan, selling antler sheds.

Question: I have been elk hunting with my father and brother out of state for years. My father was drawn for an elk hunt in California in the 1990s but none of us have been drawn since. We have been putting in for the draw since the preference point system started.

What is the new elk management plan for, and is there a way it will help our chances of being drawn? (Cody)

Orphaned mountain lion cubs at Oakland Zoo part of trend in California.

The cubs, now more than 4 months old, hail from a mountain lion population of the Santa Ana mountains that experts say is in danger, probably the most at-risk of local extinction in the country. Because it’s so cut off from other groups, with roadways and development on all sides, the pumas there are extremely genetically isolated, said Justin Dellinger, the statewide lion and wolf researcher and a senior environmental scientist for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
