The Whale Diaries.

In an epic 12,000-mile journey south, the Pacific gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) flees the chilling winter waters of the Artic to the warm and fertile bays of Baja California. Along the way, the whales must endure the fatigue of travel, foraging for amphipods, and the risk of predation.

Elusive Sierra Nevada Red Fox Captured in Tehama County.

A Sierra Nevada red fox was captured in Tehama County last month by California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) biologists researching this rare sub-species of red fox.

The 10-pound male fox was captured on national forest land just outside of Lassen Volcanic National Park, near the town of Mineral. The fox was collared and released at the capture location, and CDFW biologists have been impressed by the distances it has regularly been covering despite rough terrain and high elevation.

A Win in Court for California Sea Otters.

PASADENA, Calf. – A big win for southern sea otters, as a federal judge on the 9th Circuit in Pasadena ruled Thursday that the feds do not have to reinstate a failed policy of "No Otter Zones" that had been put in place to protect commercial fishing interests.

Parasite Found in California Boar Meat Can Literally Make Your Eyes Bleed.

This parasitic infection isn’t your typical bout of food poisoning in which you just have diarrhea for a few days. In addition to the abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting you can usually expect, trichinellosis can cause serious health problems, including conjunctival and retinal hemorrhaging — yes, bleeding from your eyes.

High-speed rail could doom mountain lions, other wildlife in Santa Cruz Mountains, biologists say.

But if the high-speed rail line is constructed without tunnels, bridges or other corridors to ensure wildlife can move through the landscape unimpeded, experts say, the Santa Cruz Mountains would become an island– fenced in by the ocean to the west and by human development to the north, east and south. For the mountain lions, badgers, bobcats and other animals of the Santa Cruz Mountains, island life could be disastrous.

“Cousins start breeding with cousins, brothers start breeding with sisters and eventually you have this spiral of inbreeding that can cause species to go extinct,” said Wilmers.
