In 2021, 4616 observations of Research Grade were made in Edinburgh (57% increase on 2020) with 956 species recorded and identified to research grade (33% increase on last year).

The most recorded species was the Mallard this year.

The top ten species recorded also included - Eurasian Magpie (Pica pica), Mute Swan (Cygnus olor), Blackbird (Turdus merula), red campion (Silene dioica), Green Alkanet (Pentaglottis sempervirens), garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata), Carrion Crow (Corvus corone), Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus).

Plant observations still represented 50% of all recorded observations, then came birds (22%) and then insects (19.5%).

The Grey squirrel was the most recorded mammal. But several mammal species present in Edinburgh have not been recorded, highlighting some of the drawbacks and biases of i-naturalist.

The Dryad’s saddle (Cerioporus squamosus) was the most recorded fungi. While the 7-spot ladybird (Coccinella septempunctata) was the most recorded insect.

I only used data of research grade under i-naturalist’s observation verification scheme.

In 2020, 2937 observation of Research Grade were made in Edinburgh with 719 species recorded and identified to research grade.

The most recorded species was the small Tortoiseshell butterfly.

The top ten species recorded also included - European Peacock Butterfly (Aglais io); Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos); Green Alkanet (Pentaglottis sempervirens); European Robin (Erithacus rubecula); Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria); Eastern Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis); Red campion (Silene dioica); Gorse (Ulex europaeus); 7-spot ladybird (Coccinella septempunctata); Mute Swan (Cygnus olor)

I only used data of research grade under i-naturalist’s observation verification scheme. This of course does not preclude identification errors but for now, it will do.
