✓ CNC 2019 Bioblitz Final Numbers!

There we go! The 2019 City Nature Challenge's results are finally out!

First of all, the challenge gathered 32,682 observers worldwide. This led to a recording of 911,210 observations!

In the Boston area itself, for which we serve in the organizing committee, we had 1,107 observers who gathered a total of 20,329 observations!

How about EwA's effort? We rock! Together with you we gathered about 1200+ wild observations over 373 different species (in less than 12-15 hours of events total)! We surveyed more than 8 locations. We covered 11 taxa over a category of 12! The only taxon that we did not cover is the chromista... Oh well - next time ;-)

EwA Results:
∗ Total [1212 records / 313 species ] » https://tinyurl.com/ewa-cnc2019-results
∗ The Fells [527 records / 214 species] » https://tinyurl.com/ewa-cnc2019-fells-results
∗ Lusitania [231 records / 102 species] » https://tinyurl.com/ewa-cnc2019-fpr-results
∗ Draw Seven Park [186 records / 68 species] » https://tinyurl.com/ewa-cnc2019-draw7-results

This year, we engaged a total of 79 participants+: 40 participants across 9 sites, and 39 2nd-degree participants (through the participation of the students of 2 of our high school teacher colleagues).

Our project supplied about 5% of all the Boston area observations! Our top collector, who tried to record the distinct species that we observed during our events, is the 5th who had the most diverse records (over 1087 observers)!

And, worldwide, our top collector (and representative of EwA), with your help made us be part of the 1% top observers (species-wise)!

For us (young EwA), that's quite an achievement! Last year, there was about only 5 of us doing the challenge and we collected 180 observations of 80 different species -which was already quite something :-)

You want to know all the exciting details? We'll publish a full detailed report later this year (sign up to our newsletter > https://www.earthwiseaware.org/newsletter/).

And thanks again to all of you, who observed, identified or supported this important effort to document wild organisms worldwide. You rock! 💚

✓ 1st Phase of the CNC 2019 Bioblitz Completed! And We Did Great!

We're super proud of what we've accomplished together with you all these past 4 days (of the City Nature Challenge)!

Together we gathered 1100+ wild observations over 359 different species (in less than 12-15 hours of events total)! We covered 11 taxa over a category of 12! The only taxon that we did not cover is the chromista (see our observations » https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/ewa-city-nature-challenge-2019?tab=stats)

This year, we engaged a total of 75 participants+: 40 participants across 9 sites, and 35 2nd-degree participants (through the participation of the students of 2 of our high school teacher colleagues).

At this time and within the larger Greater Boston Area effort, we supplied about 5% of all the observations! Our top collector, who tried to record the distinct species we observed during our events, is the 8th (over 1087 observers). As for the number of distinct species, our top collector is 4th (this stat will get further refined over the course of these 4 next days as identifications get in)! Pretty good no?!

Now worldwide, over the past 4 days, there were about 31,777 observers who gathered some 810,786 observations (of 27,817 different IDd species). Thanks to all of you who participated in the EwA events, our top collector for that effort reached the 295th position for the number of observations, and to date 259th for the number of different species observed.

Stay tuned for the final numbers in a few days! And thanks again to all of you who support us, this important effort to document wild organisms worldwide. You rock! 💚

A Wonderful 3rd Day Yesterday!

🍃 City Nature Challenge Day #3: Thanks Matt, Joe, Bill, June, Stephen, Susan, Kathleen, Gael, Dan, Xaelel and all for participating in our CNC event at the Fells today! Now our 4th event and our numbers look good thanks to all of you! We passed 750 observations (over about 280 distinct species)! We'll get the counts, the stats, all the details after we complete our next and last challenge day: today!

Go EwA! And go Boston Area CNC and colleagues!

Here are our team numbers so far and many more on the way > https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/ewa-city-nature-challenge-2019?tab=species

A Great 2nd Day!

🍃 City Nature Challenge Day #2: Thanks, Peter, Joe, Dan, Laura, Alexis, Jean, Tim, Cristina, Myriam, Mike, and all for participating in our CNC events today! Between the 3 CNC events that EwA did run so far, and today in collaboration with the Somerville Commission and the Fresh Pond Reservation, the incoming number of observations & species look pretty good.

The weather helping a little: The 2 events today had a good turn out. The current numbers in the project do not represent the final day count, since most of the EwA citizen scientists' who helped co-running the events don't have their observations uploaded yet. So, those numbers for our survey areas will definitely go up before the end of the challenge this Monday! And for us, we already passed our observation count from last year!

Go EwA! And Go Boston Area CNC!

Good 1st Day Despite the Rain & the Cold

It was gloomy today, yet a few of us made it outside. We collected 113 observation over 80 species. A few favorites: red-backed salamander, wood frog tadpoles, predacious diving beetle, flicker, deer, and a patch of red columbines.

Tomorrow should be much nicer. We'll be at the Draw Seven park in the morning, and at the Fresh Pond reservoir in the afternoon. Join us! You can check our Eventbrite calendar (. http://earthwiseaware.eventbrite.com/) for events description and location.

See you tomorrow (and at a minimum on iNat with a few of your recordings!)

We will be running a biodiversity recording event each day of the challenge. The locations where we'll run our Biobliss events during those 4 challenge days include Medford, Winchester, Cambridge, and Somerville.

We also have a seminar introducing citizen science that we run in various communities. Our seminar and events raise the importance of citizen participative science, and how to record ethically, great and scientifically relevant observations; we also share tons of tips and resources.

Citizen Science Seminars (March & April)

Species Recording Events (April 26-29)

We invite you to join our community and any of our iNaturalist projects. And you are most welcome to attend any of our local citizen science events!
