This year was the first time that Eswatini has joined the Great Southern Bioblitz. We only had a few observers, but we were very productive, with an average of over 100 observations per observer.

Activities were limited by the weather, firstly by being very hot, and then by rain. In spite of this, we managed to get over 500 observations. This included 325 species as at 14 November, when only 44% of the observations had been identified to research grade.

Highlights include the first non-camera trap photos of Southern Bushpig Potamochoerus larvatus ssp. koiropotamus, taken by Phil White (@phil183 ).

There were observations of at least thirteen species which might be new records for Eswatini, some still requiring confirmation of the identifications. There are other observations still requiring identification which might add to this number.

The fungi are not yet well investigated in Eswatini, and the observation by Deb Love of Amanita pantherina provided the first confirmed record for this species in the country.

New flora records for Eswatini included the Natal Sundew (Drosera natalensis):

Primera observación en iNat, segunda Mimoides microdamas, Michelle Delaloye @michelledelaloye Señala "Resulta que esta observación y secuencia de fotos es muy interesante. No solo sí que hay una Battus polydamas (la que vuela abajo, fijate que no posee hilera marginal de manchas amarillas en faz ventral de alas posteriores), sino que además hay una Mimoides microdamas, la primera reportada para todo iNaturalist (al menos, que yo tenga conocimiento). Mimoides microdamas es una imitadora de Battus polydamas, y se distingue de ella por poseer una mancha roja en el ángulo anal de alas posteriores, visible en ambas fases (B. polydamas no posee dicha mancha en faz dorsal). Además, respecto de la hilera de manchas amarillas en alas anteriores, terminan más alargadas hacia la costa y ápice (en polydamas se van achicando). Y bueno, como ya mencioné, esa hilera en faz ventral de alas posteriores no está presente en polydamas. Sería genial que pudieses subir algunos recortes a esta observación, además de las fotos que ya están, para tener algunas más cercanas. El “poder” de iNaturalist es que podemos dar nueva vida a nuestros recuerdos. (English below)

Hace 10 años tomé esta foto y la compartí entonces en Facebook. Fue motivo de una serie de actividades en mi trabajo para mejorar el desempeño de la empresa con objetivo de reducir o evitar estos incidentes.
Pero hoy Facebook me recordó esta foto y puedo recuperarla para usarla en iNaturalist y así contribuir con registros sobre la especie, su distribución, su comportamiento y los problemas para su conservación.
Imaginen si cada quien que tiene un recuerdo similar lo compartiera, todo lo que se podría lograr en mejorar nuestro conocimiento. Eso apoyaría mucho más nuestra toma de decisiones para mantener o mejorar nuestro futuro.

The ′′ power ′′ of iNaturalist is that we can bring new life to our memories.

10 years ago I took this picture and shared it then on Facebook. It was the reason for a series of activities in my work to improve the company's performance with a view to reducing or avoiding these incidents.
But today Facebook reminded me of this photo and I can recover it for use on iNaturalist and thus contribute records about the species, its distribution, its behaviour and the issues for conservation.
Imagine if everyone who has a similar memory shared it, all that could be accomplished in improving our knowledge. That would greatly support our decision making to maintain or improve our future.

Great Southern BioBlitz 2021 -

Ni sa Bula from beautiful Fiji, where the lockdown from the Delta Variant lifted has just been lifted.. There is a nice Fiji iNaturalist community in Fiji, that is coming together to help with the 2021Great Southern Bioblitz. You can see the observations and photos on their iNaturalist page: Fiji Nature

Our group includes folks from a number of conservation NGOs like Nature Fiji and BirdLife International, as well as folks from the Government, the University of the South Pacific and Fiji National University, and a myriad of individuals who have been active in wildlife and marine studies and photography in Fiji and the island states of Southwest Pacific.

Fiji consists of some 300 islands and 540 islets scattered over about 3,000,000 square km, much of which is still underexplored. The land area is 10% and the sea area is about 90%. The highest point is 1,324 metres on Mount Tomanivi on the big island of Viti Levu where the capital of Suva is also located, where most of us are based.

My name is Kevin, and I will be helping coordinate the Fiji folks for the 2021Great Southern Bioblitz. My partner and I have a global wildlife photography project called Bird Explorers, and you can see our iNaturalist work here: @birdexplorers here are some of what you can expect next weekend!

¡Lima se prepara para la Gran Biobúsqueda del Sur que se realizará del 22 al 25 de octubre!
Mientras tanto, Rafael Garrido Oneto, rafaelgarrido99, uno de los usuarios más destacados de iNaturalist en Perú, ha logrado una maravillosa foto de un Turtupilin (Pyrocephalus rubinus) con variación cromática inusual y que motiva a la discusión de los científicos.

Las opiniones difieren desde el albinismo, el leucismo, hasta un caso de variación extrema como ha sido observado en otros casos. Las poblaciones de Turtupilin de Lima han concitado desde hace décadas la atención por su variabilidad cromática llegando a caracterizarse más como una variedad oscura, que incluso motivó a una descripción temprana de esta población como especie.
Cada observación que realices de mariposas, hierbas, aves y otros insectos, contribuye mucho a conocer la biodiversidad de nuestras ciudades y de nuestro país.

Lima is preparing for the Great Southern Biobitz, from October 22th-25th!

Meanwhile, Rafael Garrido Oneto, rafaelgarrido99, one of the most prominent users of iNaturalist in Peru, has pulled off a wonderful photo of a Turtupilin (Pyrocephalus rubinus) with unusual chromatic variation and motivating scientist s' discussion.
Opinions differ from albinism, leucism, to a case of extreme variation as observed in other cases. Lima's Turtupilin populations have for decades focused attention on its chromatic variability becoming more characterized as a dark variety, which even motivated an early description of this population as a species.
Every observation you make of butterflies, herbs, birds and other insects contributes a lot to the biodiversity of our cities and our country.
