Buongiorno a tutti voi e grazie di essere qui!
Parole scontate ma che vanno dette con l'entusiasmo dell'inizio di un percorso che mi auguro divertente e appassionante per tutti noi.
Ho creato il gruppo dell'Osservatorio Entomologico Italiano essenzialmente per trovare dei compagni di viaggio, ma anche per cercare di dare a chi svolge osservazioni di insetti e aracnidi in Italia un punto di riferimento e aggregazione sulla bellissima piattaforma iNaturalist.
L'aggregazione mi sembra un fattore molto importante per tutti gli iNaturalisti - italiani ma non solo - che si trovano a svolgere le proprie osservazioni nell'areale italiano: un contesto pur vasto, ma comunque ristretto e un po' ai margini dell'attività che si svolge sulla piattaforma nostra ospite. Infatti restringere la tipologia delle osservazioni alle due classi tipicamente "entomologiche" e al solo territorio italiano consente di muoversi in un contesto più specifico di competenze - e, banalmente, di un numero di osservazioni più gestibile - con minore dispersione di energie e maggiori sinergie tra i partecipanti.
Penso anche che professionisti, seri appassionati, o anche neofiti (come me) e curiosi, insomma chiunque qui su iNaturalist abbia a che fare con l'entomofauna italiana, possa trarre vantaggio da iniziative volte a integrarsi con altre realtà in rete, siano esse altre community come pure gruppi scientifici. In molti casi penso sia molto molto più efficace intraprendere queste iniziative muovendosi in un gruppo dotato di un coordinamento.
L'importante, l'essenziale, è che tutti noi ci sentiamo motivati positivamente, e che ognuno - nel rispetto dei limiti della propria disponibilità - dia il suo minimo ma importante contributo: osservando, identificando, proponendo, criticando!
Ecco, penso che come cappello iniziale basti e avanzi :)
Propongo, per iniziare le attività di collaborazione, di partire con il progetto http://www.odonata.it/attivita/iniziative/progetti/atlantelibellule/, segnalatomi da finrod, che ringrazio moltissimo.
Il piccol(issim)o contributo che possiamo fornire al progetto è di inviare le osservazioni già raccolte e raccoglierne altre (eventualmente dando priorità agli Odonata nello smaltimento delle osservazioni estive!), con l'integrazione di alcune informazioni, necessarie per la realizzazione dell'Atlante. Appena riesco modificherò la scheda di inserimento tenendo conto dei campi necessari a questo scopo. Darei priorità a questo progetto perché la scadenza per la raccolta dei dati è fine ottobre… praticamente domani!
Un aspetto importante è la qualità dei dati raccolti, primo fra tutti l'identificazione! A questo riguardo mi sembra necessario che le identificazioni delle schede che forniremo abbiano ricevuto una conferma:
- qui su iNaturalist
- altrove, su altre community
sulla base di specifiche e documentabili competenze dell'osservatore
Se avete suggerimenti in merito vi prego di scrivermi, questo è in effetti un punto chiave, e per anticipare uno spunto per quello che diverrebbe un dibattito, quello che mi viene di pensare è che il criterio di iNaturalist "se due utenti sono d'accordo su una identificazione l'osservazione è research grade" sia davvero poco rigoroso e assai poco scientifico.
Per cambiare argomento, è importante anche promuovere il nostro gruppo, per attrarre partecipanti di ogni livello di esperienza e competenza. Penso di cercare di muovermi qui su iNaturalist chiedendo di mettere in evidenza il progetto per qualche tempo (puntando sul fatto che ci sono pochi progetti italiani), specie dopo che saremo operativi con il progetto dell'Atlante delle libellule italiane. Va presa in considerazione anche la promozione su altre community entomologiche italiane e non solo.
Nel frattempo sto anche cercando di farmi produrre un logo per il gruppo, qualcosa di carino che comunichi i tre concetti: Insecta, Arachnida, Italia. Spero di avere presto qualcosa da mostrarvi ;)

Prego di nuovo ciascuno di voi di fornire spunti, suggerimenti e critiche costruttive, segnatamente per quanto riguarda altre collaborazioni o per forme di promozione dell'Osservatorio Entomologico.
Voglio infine rivolgere un particolare ringraziamento a finrod i cui suggerimenti sono stati non solo fondamentali, ma direi costitutivi per questo inizio.

Hello to you all, thank you for being here!
Words that can be easily foregone, but they must be said here with the enthusiasm of the start of a journey that I wish to be exciting for the all of us.
I started the Italian Entomological Observatory group first of all in order to find fellow travelers, but also to give people observing insects and arachnids in Italy a reference point on the most beautiful iNaturalist platform.
Aggregation looks like a very important factor for all iNaturalists - not only italian - conducting observations inside the italian areal: a vast context, but quite restricted and segregated in the activity normally taking place on our host platform. Indeed, the only fact of restricting observations to the two typical "entomological" classes and to the italian territory only allows to move among a more specific context of expertise - and, as simple as that, of more manageable observation numbers - with less energy loss and better synergies for all partakers.
I also think that pros, serious amateurs, even beginners (like me) and simple curious,that is everyone here on iNaturalist who has something ado with italian insect/arachnid fauna, can take advantage from the integration with other internet places, both communities and scientific groups. In many cases I believe to be much more effective to undertake such efforts inside a coordinated group.
The important, essential fact, is that the all of us feel positively motivated, and that everyone - within the respect of the limits of his/her means - give his/her small but important contribution: with observations, identifications, proposals, criticisms!
That's it, I think that's quite a preamble :)
I propose, as a start of all collaborations, to begin with the project http://www.odonata.it/attivita/iniziative/progetti/atlantelibellule/, suggested to me by fin rod, whom I thank very much. The project objective is to compile an atlas of italian dragonflies and damselflies.
The (very) small contribution we can give to the project is to send all previously collected observations and possibly collect more (maybe simply giving a higher priority to Odonata in the processing the queue of all the summer observations!), with the integration of some information, mandatory for the Atlas project. As soon as I can I will add all required fields in the observation page of our group. I'd give priority to this project since the deadline for contributing data is the end of October… which is very near!
An important aspect is the quality of collected data, first of all the identification! I think it's necessary that all observations we will contribute can be confirmed:
- here on iNaturalist by at least two but better three users
- somewhere else, on other communities - with explicit link to the discussion topic
on the basis of specific (documentable) expertise of the observer
If you have suggestions on this please write to me, this is a key point indeed, and anticipating a bit what can easily become a debate, what I think is that the iNaturalist criteria "if two users agree on an identification we have a research grade observation" is really not much rigorous and quite not scientific at all.
Just to change the subject, it's also important to promote our group, in order to attract participants of all levels of expertise. I think I will try to ask, here on iNaturalist, to put or group in evidence for some time (relying on the fact that there are few italian projects), specially after we are started with the italian odonata atlas. Promotion on other entomological communities (not limiting to the italian ones) is to be considered.
In the meanwhile I'm trying to have a group logo produced, something cosy that can communicate three concepts: Insecta, Arachnida, Italy. I hope to have soon something to show you ;)

I ask all of you to give me ideas, suggestions and constructive criticisms, specially regarding new forms of collaborations and promotions of the Italian Entomological Observatory.
