The City Nature Challenge returns April 29-May 9!

Because you've registered for a BioBlitz in the past, I wanted to let you know that the biggest BioBlitz of the year is coming up at the end of this month! Join Lincoln Park Zoo's team for the “City Nature Challenge,” an annual event where participants from over 350 cities across the world compete to log the most observations of the natural world. This year’s observation window will be from April 29th-May 2nd. Observations will be identified from May 2nd-May 9th. We need your help to put Chicago on the map!

There are many ways to participate:

  1. Register to join Lincoln Park Zoo’s “City Nature Challenge” team here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/lincoln-park-zoo-bioblitz-city-nature-challenge-2022-registration-297327904767 Your free registration will unlock access to three different events throughout the weekend. You can attend as many (or few) events as you like!
    a. Friday, April 29, 6-7 pm: BioBlitz 101 - kickoff and introduction (on Zoom). Staff from Lincoln Park Zoo will inform participants what to look for and how to use iNaturalist.
    b. Saturday, April 30, 11 am - 2 pm: BioBlitz @ Lincoln Park Zoo's Nature Boardwalk (in person). Come together for hands-on discovery & practice field research methods with scientists from Lincoln Park Zoo’s Urban Wildlife Institute. You can also meet research partners from the Cook County Farm Bureau, DuPage Forest Preserve, and Lake Forest College. This event is drop-in style, so you do not need to stay for the full duration.
    c. Monday, May 9, 6-7 pm: BioBlitz Celebration and Wrap-up (on Zoom). Join the celebration to hear expert commentary on your contributions and ask questions about anything you noticed while BioBlitz-ing.

  2. View more in-person events happening around the Chicago area here: https://www.chicagowilderness.org/page/CityNatureChallenge These events are not organized by Lincoln Park Zoo, but they are sure to be a great time! Options include bird walks, beach clean-ups, and more.
  3. If you’d rather collect data independently, join the worldwide “City Nature Challenge” project on iNaturalist here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2021-chicago-metro Collect observations from April 29th-May 2nd and upload them using your free iNaturalist account. Your observations will automatically be added to the challenge!
  4. Help identify photos uploaded by other iNaturalist users during the identification window (May 3-9). Identifying photos is a great way to practice your research skills from the comfort of your own home.

Questions? Email emartell@lpzoo.org. We hope you'll join us for the challenge!

Camera Traps Used to Study Wildlife

Lincoln Park Zoo’s Urban Wildlife Institute has an impressive amount of wildlife pictures from their very own camera traps. These cameras are set up all around the city and can tell us more about our wild neighbors. Learn more and help us identify some animals by visiting Chicago Wildlife Watch and watching the videos attached.

Chicagoland film- coyote shadow puppet!

Take a break from identifying observations to enjoy this short shadow-puppet style film about an urban coyote. UWI scientists Seth Magle and Mason Fidino lent their expertise to this creative project! http://www.chicagolandfilm.net/index.html

Ready, set, identify!

Congrats to everyone on a weekend full of observations! Together, we logged 993 observations of 373 species. This was a great contribution to scientists worldwide!

What's next? Let's use this week to make sure each observation has an identification. There are 600 observations that need another ID to reach "Research Grade" (that happens when at least 2 identifiers agree). If iNaturalist users have suggested an identification for your photo, take some time to look through and "agree" with the observation. You can find the photos in our project that need ID here: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?project_id=104103&quality_grade=needs_id&verifiable=any

Not sure how to identify? The Field Museum has some helpful quick ID guides for spring in Chicago:

Spring in Chicagoland: https://fieldguides.fieldmuseum.org/guides/guide/1244
Common Wild Bee Genera: https://fieldguides.fieldmuseum.org/guides/guide/1252
Common Trees: https://fieldguides.fieldmuseum.org/guides/guide/1247
Birds of Thatcher Woods: https://fieldguides.fieldmuseum.org/guides/guide/1266

If you see a notable observation, feel free to leave a comment for your fellow naturalist! Let's build a community and recognize each other for a job well done.

Comment below: do you have any favorite field guides to use for identification?

This is our last day to collect data, and it looks like there are some severe storms on the way in the evening. Try to get out for a walk in the morning or over lunch to log a few more sightings!
