Obscured Data

An important reminder ahead of next years City Nature Challenge!

We are currently updating our local copy of data which is used to inform conservation and biodiversity strategy in the local area and have had to delete around 500 records of locally significant protected species such as Badger, Bats and Eel because they have been obscured from us.

Records are obscured either by you or automatically by iNaturalist where the species is a conservation priority. This includes many wetland birds, marine species and plants.

Through us you can directly shape local decision taking, influence conservation, and direct planning for biodiversity in the face of a wide range of current and future challenges but to do this we need access to your information. Please consider allowing us access to your obscured data by permitting the BioBank Project. This means that we can download hidden data but your information will not be available to the general public at the same level. So you can be confident your species location remains protected but also used to aid conservation locally.

You can check or change your settings by going to our project: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/merseyside-biobank then, if you are not a member, click on join at which point you will be prompted to share your hidden data.

If you are already a member then click on "Your Membership" where you can view your current settings and change them if necessary.

Data Use Reminder!

Just a quick reminder.

I have just updated the local data holdings from this project and a couple of observations;

Records are often still licensed as 'CC-BY-NC' - Currently the position of the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) is that LERCs (e.g. Merseyside BioBank) are not allowed to use these observations in our normal work, such as data services for conservation via planning. If you would like to allow us to use your records please update your observation licence to 'CC-BY' or 'CC0'. This can be done from your profile settings, and can be done separately from the image license if that is a concern (message me if you need help).

Records are still being obscured - In the latest export over 6,300 observation locations were obscured. These included many significant and priority species such as Otter, Badger, Bats and various wading birds. It is sensible to obscure locations from general public access. However, please consider allowing us access to the full location to support local conservation efforts, we are unable to import or make use of obscured observations.

Local Sites re-launch

Today saw the re-launch meeting (online) of the North Merseyside Local Sites Partnership.

Responsible for the designation and advocacy of Local Wildlife and Geological Sites in Sefton, Liverpool, Knowsley and St Helens the relaunched partnership aims to revitalise engagement around these special places for wildlife while also reviewing the guidelines for selection and whether existing sites still qualify (and are appropriately listed) or if they need removal from the lists. The new partnership will also assess potential new Local Wildlife Sites (LWS) to be adopted.

A critical part of LWS selection is evidencing that a site meets the selection criteria a significant part of which includes the presence of priority species or species assemblage. Here there is plenty of opportunity to engage with the process by sharing your observations of wildlife. Those observations may tell us something we didn't know about a site, help to evidence the continuation of a population at a site or help to identify new locations we are unaware of!

iNaturalistUK Launched by the NBN

The NBN Trust is excited to announced that iNaturalistUK is the newest member of the international iNaturalist Network.

A collaboration led by the NBN Trust with the Marine Biological Association (MBA) and the Biological Records Centre (BRC), iNaturalistUK joins the wealth of recording tools available to UK naturalists.

Why iNaturalist?
One of the world’s most popular nature apps, iNaturalist helps identify the plants and animals around us while being part of a growing community of scientists and naturalists.

Working with MBA and BRC, the NBN Trust will be developing ways of promoting and using iNaturalist in the UK to complement the other established recording tools already available to the biological recording community, including iRecord and iSpot.

Sharing the data
Users in the United Kingdom are encouraged to affiliate their account to iNaturalistUK to allow partner organisations enhanced access to UK sightings. This won’t affect existing arrangements with how sightings are currently shared to GBIF or are available to the international community. It will allow the BRC and local environmental records centres access to more detailed records.

Whilst there are currently no plans to link iNaturalistUK data directly to the NBN Atlas, over the coming months the BRC will be working with the National Recording Schemes to facilitate the integration of iNaturalistUK data within the schemes. As part of this support, it might include ways in which iNaturalistUK data could be added to the NBN Atlas, if this is something the schemes wish to do.

The MBA will be building on its extensive experience in coastal BioBlitz events to increase the wildlife records that are openly available. The NBN Trust, with its network of members, is well placed to engage with these citizen scientists and encourage greater participation in wildlife recording, particularly for groups with little previous experience.

The iNaturalist network and community
The iNaturalist community in the United Kingdom has been growing steadily over the past few years. From around 10,000 observers in early 2019 there are now more than 56,000 observers who have recorded over 15,000 species in the UK. The growth of the City Nature Challenge event in the UK has encouraged its popularity.

The iNaturalist Network now has fifteen nationally-focused sites that are fully connected and interoperable with the global iNaturalist site. These include Naturalista Colombia, iNaturalist Australia, iNaturalist Israel, iNaturalist Finland, and iNaturalist Luxembourg, and now iNaturalist United Kingdom.

Any iNaturalist user can log in on any of the sites using their same username and password and will see the same notifications. All data from all network sites are still shared globally and fully accessible from each site using search filters.

Find out more
Find out more by visiting the iNaturalistUK information pages on the NBN Trust website.

Help us record wildlife in the Baltic Triangle!

We're currently working with Liverpool Council and Mersey Forest on part of the Urban GreenUP project. As part of this activity we are encouraging people to spot and share sightings of wildlife within the Baltic Triangle area. The project for this can be found here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/urban-greenup-baltic-triangle

We want as many people as possible to get involved to provide insights into what species occur where in the area, for now it's pretty much a blank canvas!

April Download

We've just carried out the first download of your wildlife sightings since the last Greenspace Challenge. You have contributed around 16,000 new sightings which will now be used to help local conservation effort and make better decisions for biodiversity across our area.

Keep at it and enjoy yourselves! Don't forget we will still be running the #CityNatureChallenge later this month so please do get involved.

As always any questions of comments to info@merseysidebiobank.org.uk
