NYBG EcoQuest November 2017 – Week One

INVESTIGATE INVASIVES!

November 1–7
Nineteen naturalists have made eighty observations of Common Reed (Phragmites australis), Japanese Angelica Tree (Aralia elata), Italian Arum (Arum italicum) and Porcelain-berry (Ampelopsis glandulosa) and associated organisms. A new infestation of Italian arum was just discoverd in the Bronx River Forest by NYC Parks staff. Your observations will help them manage these problems.

NYBG EcoQuest November 2017 - Week Two

INVESTIGATE INVASIVES!

November 1–14
Twenty-four naturalists have made one hundred and thirteen observations of Common Reed (Phragmites australis), Japanese Angelica Tree (Aralia elata), Italian Arum (Arum italicum) and Porcelain-berry (Ampelopsis glandulosa) and associated organisms. A new infestation of Italian arum was just discovered on the Bronx River in Westchester county. This is a new county record. Until they are eradicated, these plants pose a threat downstream in the Bronx.

November 1–21
Twenty-seven naturalists have made one hundred and fifty-two observations of Common Reed (Phragmites australis), Japanese Angelica Tree (Aralia elata), Italian Arum (Arum italicum) and Porcelain-berry (Ampelopsis glandulosa) and associated organisms. Good news! The infestation of Italian Arum discovered on the Bronx River in Westchester county was recently dug up and discarded-- an example of Early Detection and Rapid Response (EDRR) in action!
