Ultimate Herp Challenge

We are challenging you to find all 22 species of herptiles in Nova Scotia. This will not be an easy task and for every category you complete, you will earn one of four badges, the Frog Finder, Salamander Scout, Turtle Tracker or Snake Seeker. When you find all 22 species you will earn your fifth and final badge, the Ultimate Herper.
To enter the challenge, you must sign up online (https://forms.office.com/r/FnhAWyAi8j) so that we can track your progress. You can submit sightings through our Herp Atlas website, via email or through iNaturalist, just make sure you join the Nova Scotia Herp Atlas project. The atlas is a collaborative effort to learn about the abundance and distribution of reptile and amphibian species. You can help by getting outside and uploading all the reptiles and amphibians you see or hear.
Remember to herp responsibly, please follow all public health guidelines and minimize disturbance to wildlife.
For this challenge, everyone will start from the beginning and only sightings made after January 1, 2024 will be considered. Are you ready for the Ultimate Challenge?

We hit 10,000!

We have officially surpassed 10k observations on the Nova Scotia Herp Atlas. No stone unturned here, we have an amazing crew of folks out finding all the species in Nova Scotia. We have had sightings of all 22 native freshwater herp species, a few non-native species, and even a few rare sightings of the large Leatherback Sea turtle. We have been thoroughly enjoying all your great photos and audio recordings. Keep up the great job!

We have hit 8000 Observations!! INCREDIBLE

As the cold weather approaches we will likely not see as many of our Herptofauna until spring. That being said, you have all done an amazing job finding species across the province! With over 8000 observations and a crew of over 3000 observers out there helping us understand the herpetofauna in Nova Scotia. We are already seeing new things throughout these observations. Check out your fellow herp atlaser's finds by scrolling through their observations in the project, you may see something you have never seen before! From bright blue Bullfrogs to pitch black Maritime Garter snakes, you folks are finding the rarest Nova Scotia has to offer. Keep up the good work!

3000 Observations! Incredible!

WOW! We can't believe we reached 3,000 observations on iNaturalist. That is three times more than this time last year in Nova Scotia. The data we're collecting is going to help for years by giving us the information we need to track the distribution and population trends of Nova Scotia's amphibians and reptiles. Thank you everyone for participating!

For observations of Turtles and other species at risk, we'd appreciate it if you also sent your observation information to us directly at HerpsNS@gmail.com so that we can access it as soon as possible.

Survey for Herp Atlas Participants / 2000 Observations!

We've just hit 2000 observations! Amazing - Thank you everyone for your hard work!

Of course, we're always after more observations so don't forget to encourage your friends to join iNat and start observing Herps!

We've created this short 4 minute survey for participants and would appreciate it if you filled it out! The responses will help us improve the Herp Atlas and will also help support future funding for environmental work in Kespukwitk!

Thank you again for your help! Happy Herping!

We're outpacing the increase in iNat observations by over 150%!

To everyone helping with the Herp Atlas: You are amazing!!

As of June 9th, we now have over 1300 Herp observations in Nova Scotia and our coverage is getting better and better across the province.

We've been getting a few questions about whether or not we're making a difference. After all, more and more people are using iNaturalist so are we seeing more observations because of the Herp Atlas or just because we have more users in NS?

Lets compare how much all observations have increased compared to Herps...

Number of total observations in Nova Scotia from Jan 1 2020 - June 9, 2020: 32359

Number of total observations in Nova Scotia from Jan 1 2021 - June 9, 2021: 48163

% increase in total observations between this year and last year = 49%

Number of Herp observations in Nova Scotia from Jan 1 2020 - June 9, 2020: 443

Number of Herp observations in Nova Scotia from Jan 1 2021 - June 9, 2021: 1337

% increase in herp observations between this year and last year = 202%

We're outpacing the general increase in observations by 153% - Awesome!!
