Join the City Nature Challenge! / Participez au Défi nature urbaine!

Welcome back Observation Nation. Spring is in full swing which means lots a lot of us are itching to enjoy some warmer temperatures outside and the awakening of wildlife around us. And in less than two weeks we have an amazing opportunity to do just that…

The City Nature Challenge (CNC) is an annual citizen science event that gets people outside to enjoy nature in their city as well as create a living record of urban wildlife. The CNC is a global initiative that encourages friendly competition between cities to get the most observations. From April 30th to May 3rd, 2021 participating cities will ask their citizens to get outside and take photos of wildlife (this includes both plants and animals!) in their municipality using the free iNaturalist app or iNaturalist.ca. More than 400 cities will be taking part in 2021 from around the world, 23 of which are right here in Canada. To find out if your city is participating, visit the iNaturalist project page.

How do I get involved?
If you are in a participating city, take photos and upload them to iNaturalist during the event from April 30th to May 3rd, 2021 and your observations will be automatically added.
Those who are not in a participating city can help identify observations from April 30th to May 9th, 2021.

Le Défit nature urbaine (DNU) est un événement annuel centré sur la science citoyenne : il pousse les gens à sortir pour profiter de la nature dans leurs villes pendant qu’ils créent un registre vivant de leur faune urbaine. C’est une initiative internationale aux allures de compétition amicale entre villes, pour voir laquelle va enregistrer le plus d’observations. Du 30 avril au 3 mai 2021, les villes participantes vont encourager leurs citoyens à sortir pour photographier les plantes et les animaux de leur municipalité avec l’application gratuite iNaturalist ou sur le site iNaturalist.ca. Plus de 400 villes de partout dans le monde vont participer en 2021, dont 23 au Canada. Pour savoir si votre ville participe, visitez la page du projet sur iNaturalist.

Comment participer?
Si votre ville participe, prenez des photos et téléversez-les sur iNaturalist pendant le DNU, du 30 avril au 3 mai 2021; vos observations seront automatiquement ajoutées au projet.
Si votre ville ne participe pas, aidez à identifier les espèces observées du 30 avril au 9 mai 2021.
