El término e inicio de un año más de oportunidades
Queridos amigos
Con gusto escribimos estas líneas, para trasmitirles todo lo que significan para nosotros y lo que la reserva de Paco's Reserva de Flora y Fauna Silvestre nos deja en este año que se va.
Sin duda ha sido un año de logros pero también de retos; en febrero vimos partir a una pareja de coyotes dentro de la reserva, con la esperanza de que hallen en los recónditos espacios de la reserva un espacio para crecer y establecerse; abril nos ocupó construyendo los nidos para los patos pijijies que llegarían después; en mayo nos sorprendimos con los arácnidos y con los helodermas, sin duda uno de los habitantes más consentidos; junio fue en definitiva un mes bastante importante, ya que materializamos la solicitud de certificación como ADVC de Paco's Reserva de Flora y Fauna Silvestre ante la CONANP, hecho que involucro el esfuerzo de muchas personas y el apoyo invaluable del Dr. Carlos Galindo Leal y todo el equipo de Naturalista y la CONABIO; mientras tanto en la reserva los patos pijijies empezaron a usar los refugios; julio nos mostró lo que es el valor de trabajar en equipo, cuando una parvada de urracas trató de defender a un congénere de un cara cara, también tuvimos la fortuna de poder liberar un jabalí dentro del espacio que comprende Paco's Reserva de Flora y Fauna Silvestre; septiembre nos recibió con una serpiente bastante coqueta y una impresionante águila pescadora cazando en el reservorio dentro de la reserva; noviembre marcó también un punto importante dentro de la vida de Paco's Reserva de Flora y Fauna Silvestre, al ser partícipes del 1er Congreso Internacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas organizado por el CIBNOR, evento que reunió a diferentes académicos, estudiantes y naturalistas de talla internacional y en el cual llevamos la experiencia de Paco's Reserva de Flora y Fauna Silvestre; diciembre nos dio motivos para celebrar, al alcanzar las 20,000 observaciones de bichos, plantas y demás cosas vivas dentro de la reserva…
Nada de esto sería posible sin su participación, queridos amigos, sin su apoyo, sin sus palabras de aliento, sin su compañía, por ello les decimos ¡gracias! No queremos mencionar nombres, porque la lista sería interminable, pero a todos los tenemos presentes.
Esto es parte de la historia que hemos vivido este año que termina, la cual nos obliga a entregarnos completamente para que este 2017 que comienza podamos seguir cosechando triunfos. Falta mucho por hacer y aunque a veces parezca complicado realizarlo, sabemos que con el apoyo de ustedes podremos hacerlo.
Quédense cerca, vienen cosas impresionantes…

I met Francisco Farriols a few years back through iNaturalist/iNaturalista. We arranged to meet in Puerto Vallarta and I've got great memories of walking around the Botanical Garden there with he and his gorgeous wife Liliana. My Spanish sucks and their English weak but somehow we connected on every other level: exceptionally charsmatic and interesting people transcend language...have you noticed that? He invited me to "His Reserve" just outside of Mazatlan. I finally took him up on it. Home from a glorious week of Mexican spiders, birds, dragonflies and butterflies.
Even after just a week there, it's clear "the politics of Nature" in this country are intense and not too supportive.
Francisco, his charming son Paco ( @pacof ) and the Arachnid Monster himself Diego @d_b Barrales have worked hard to inventory as much as they can there as the City of Mazatlan spreads towards the East. Development of some of the property in order to save the rest is a tough hat trick to pull off ( Reminded me of the Habitat Conservation Plan HCP the City of Brisbane has for San Bruno Mountain's three endangered butterflies. ) Lots are being sold only to folks who have a commitment in preserving the surrounding wildlife. Francisco is resolute in maintaining this goal.
Passing out iNat t-shirts ( thanks @kueda & @joelle ) one night at a huge meal they'd thrown for me ( one of many),
my take away image is watching Diego explain the app to another, both with headlamps on. This...worldwide community of Naturalists we all belong to now - sometimes it's better to be around it in a language one can't understand. The joy...the love...the unbridled affection...we all get...from likeminded...strangers.
In a city with a lot of crazy-ass statues, Mazatlan needs to build one for mi amigo Francisco Farriols.
When curiosity and love for the nature are present in the path of the people, language does not represent a problem, because in the bottom we are in the same channel.
We are so happy that you were able to visit us at the Reserve, it is always comforting to be ables of share this preserve effort of the dry forest of Mazatlan and at the same time learn from the visitors, because there is always something unknown just waiting to be observed.
This place will be always open for you, dear @robberfly, and for every naturalist that wants to know it.
