Last Call!

Last call for pollinator observations! This community had done a great job observing in each of the 11 parks. We're very excited to download and share the data once the BioBlitz is over today.

So, the sun is shining! The rain has provided much-needed moisture and put a sparkle on everything, so if you have time today or after work, grab a few more observations in one of our parks, and we'll close out the 2020 BioBlitz on a positive note!

THANK YOU, EVERYONE!!

You All Are Amazing!

We've had such a great turnout for our BioBlitz! Thank you to all who have been in the parks identifying pollinators!

Two days left, so if there are parks you'd still like to get to, your observations are welcome!

Oak Hall Regional Park, Eugene Fasick Park, and Grays Woods Park could still use some observation love!

THANK YOU!

One Parks Needs You!

Hi everyone. Wow, did we make a big jump this past weekend in observations. Thank you to everyone who has joined our BioBlitz and is making observations or confirming IDs! The wonderful fall weather we're having must have had something to do with it!

As of this morning, one park still needs some observations. Eugene Fasick Park does need some attention during the last 10 days if anyone can get there. The park actually has two sections that connect through a small trail system. Along the edges of Spring Creek are some habitat areas that should allow for some observations. Parking is available at the main park site off of Fasick Lane in Boalsburg.

Remember, this event is specifically for pollinators--plants and pollinators themselves. The categories are included in the project listing, so we are looking for this kind of data for the parks so that we may make future decisions regarding mowed areas, pollinator plantings, grass meadows, etc.

Thank you all again and we look forward to a big finish on September 30!!

Sunday Update 9/20/20

Hi everyone. A quick reminder that we will not be hosting the Moths on the Move event tonight. :( It was a pre-registration required event, but we didn't receive enough people to host the event.

The BioBlitz continues to do well this month with several of our parks that didn't have any observations catching up to other parks. We are still in need of some observations, so please check the big map as the parks are located on it. You can tell if a park has had observations via the red location pins; if a park doesn't have any, please consider visiting it and capturing some pollinators or pollinator plants!

Enjoy this gorgeous day!

Moths On The Move!

As part of our month-long BioBlitz, we have a very cool "Moths On The Move" event on Sunday, September 20.

Did you know that moths are the night shift of the pollinator world? Join us as we peek into the nocturnal world of heterocera. This program will help you add to your iNaturalist findings for the Parks for Pollinators Bioblitz! https://www.crpr.org/bioblitz

During this nighttime event, besides checking out the cool moths we'll see, you will be able to stop and "Ask the Entomologist" about moths and butterflies, and gather and take home supplies for the Moth Mimicry craft! We also have a very fun Moth Matching Memory Game that helps you learn about PA Native moths. Lastly, moths use "eyespots" for anti-predation--keeping predators at bay! You'll be able to create your very own "eyespots" with this cool craft!

Registration is required for one of the four timeslots so that we can ensure physical distancing. Masks will be required for this event.

We hope you will join us at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center for this evening event--one of our BioBlitz sites!

Four Parks Need You!

Our BioBlitz volunteers are doing a great job with 40 pollinator-related observations at just about the half-way point of the September event!

However, we have four parks that have 0 observations though, so we're encouraging our Citizen Scientists to get out to Blue Spring, Fasick, Grays Woods, and Spring Creek!

Blue Spring Park has a great little environmental area along the creek towards the rear of the park; there should be some pollinator plantings in that location. Eugene Fasick Park also has a connector trail between the front portion of the park and the rear portion, and it's along Spring Creek. There should be some activity there. Grays Woods is a new park with a new playground and some trails open. We're trying to get some baseline info. for this park, especially along the trail system. And Spring Creek Park should have some activity on the opposite side of the main park (cross at the covered bridge). The should be some pollinator plants on that side within the meadow along the creek and following the trail toward the "Walker Tract" side of the park. Check out the maps included in the Project Info.!

Thanks everyone! Keep up the GREAT WORK!

Thank you!

A quick thank you to our volunteers who are helping us ID pollinator plants and pollinators during our 2020 BioBlitz! We really appreciate you getting baseline data in our 11 park sites!

If you're interested we are planning a fun "Moths on the Move!" event on Sunday, September 20. This event is part of the BioBlitz and will give everyone a chance to ID some moths at night in a safe atmosphere.

See you at the parks!

Exciting!

Thank you for those who have joined us this week--the first week of the 2020 BioBlitz!

Centre Region Parks and Recreation is looking forward to getting this baseline data in the 11 parks chosen for this year's BioBlitz. If you haven't yet started, don't worry; there is still plenty of time as this event runs through September 30.

We're looking for data in the categories within our project--bees, butterflies, moths, wasps, bats, and more, plus flowering/pollinator plants. You have to be quiet and have patience to photograph those moths and butterflies, but enjoy your time in the various parks while waiting for those photo captures! The 11 parks include Cecil Irvin Park, Fairbrook Park, Tom Tudek Memorial Park, Circleville Park, Bernel Road Park, Oak Hall Regional Park, Spring Creek Park, Eugene Fasick Park, Blue Spring Park, Millbrook Marsh Nature Center, and Lederer Park.

The weather looks great for Saturday, so grab your smart phone and take a leisurely walk in one of these BioBlitz-participating walks!

Thanks!

First Day!

Hi everyone. We're so glad you made it to our Project Page!

This is our first BioBlitz and many of us are "newbies" to iNaturalist and still figuring out the connections between observations and getting them documented into the project. Towards the end of the day, we're going to attempt some observations to help kick-off our own project.

Stay tuned for more news from Centre Region Parks and Recreation!
