The End of the Project, but the Beginning of an Era

Congratulations to all of the participants in the Plants of Princeton project! Together, we identified over 150 plant species in and around Princeton. Today might be the last day of this project, but it need not be the end of the fun. Join us in the Insects & Spiders of New Jersey project, beginning today and lasting for the next week!

And of course, now that you've figured out iNaturalist, keep using it to learn about your natural world while you support science -- it's there for you anytime!

We're off to a great start!

We are only a few days in, but there's already a striking variety of plants being identified in and around Princeton. Keep going and enjoy the weather!

If you've noticed our project numbers drop, it's only because we are now limiting the numbers to the observations from those who've joined our project. This helps us better see what our immediate neighbors are identifying and know our full impact, but you can always see what else getting identified outside of this project, through the Explore tab.

Have fun!

Earth Day the Social Distancing Way

This month marks the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day. We are deeply concerned about the impact the COVID-19 pandemic is having on our community, but want to support a safe celebration of this important milestone. Sustainable Princeton and the Princeton University Office of Sustainability have joined forces to create a series of Nature Scavenger Hunts and hope you will join us in this virtual activity.

Beginning tomorrow, we are launching Plants of Princeton & New Jersey -- an action-packed citizen-science campaign to help you discover all kinds of plants in Princeton and the surrounding areas. In order for this effort to succeed, we need you to get out there and observe nature, while continuing to respect social distancing advice.

To participate create an account with iNaturalist and join this Plants of Princeton project starting tomorrow, April 4. Throughout the week, look for plants in your yard, on your walks, and in local parks. Any plant will do, including trees, flowers, or anything else that catches your interest. When you find a plant, use the app to make an observation, or take a picture to upload it at later time.

As you identify plants, take this opportunity to learn more about them and see what else is being discovered in our community. Which are native to our area and which are invasive? What other interesting facts can you discover? Regardless, your efforts support scientific research. Check out our frequently asked questions to learn more about this fascinating project.

We have scavenger hunts lined up for each week of April. Please be safe and join us!
