Workday with four people from 3pm to 5pm- spreading mulch, weeding, and watering.

Saw a Red Admiral and several Cabbage White Butterflies.

Many of the plants are continuing or starting to bloom, including Miniature Lupine, Douglas Iris, Sea Thrift, and Beach Strawberry.

The California Phacelia is starting to go to seed.

The patch is growing! Goodbye pink flags.

The plants of the Potrero Hill Eco-Patch have been growing steadily since they were planted during November and December, but over the last few weeks they have really taken off with a brilliant show of flowers and textures. A beautiful display of San Francisco ecology and the hard work of the Potrero Hill neighbors!

At the time of planting, the pink flag identifiers towered above the plants. Lately, many of them have become lost in the sea of growth. Thus over the last few days, Alex has been at work placing the flags in storage for hopefully future iterations. As a result, the garden is really coming alive and the plant mixes are becoming more legible. It's been wonderful to watch these plants grow and learn more about their different stages of growth. Bring on summer!

Watering

Today each plot was watered (5 minutes each).

The Phacelia that has gone to seed is already starting to decline and fall over.

There are lots of brown leaves in the Achillea 'Sonoma Coast', maybe not enough water?

It's interesting that the filler seeds didn't necessarily stay in the plot where I spread them! I'm finding Lupine bicolor in Plant Mix 1, where I thought had only spread Achillea seeds, and there is no yarrow growing in Plant Mix 2 where I had broadcasted the Lupine.

The bittercress, which was the most prevalent weed in the beginning of the year is now mostly gone. There is still a lot of chickweed.

Open Garden morning

Now that the new growth in each of the plant mixes was no longer hidden by the pink flags, Sunday morning was a great time to share the progress with neighbors. We invited folks who have been involved with the park. Eddie, Noreen and Alex were on hand to answer questions and explain the test garden objectives. Counting everyone, we had about 16 visitors to the Open Garden. This was a nice way to meet neighbors who are interested in helping to promote native habitat planting.
