Please join the NHC@SDSU for our last club meeting of the academic year. We are excited to host Jann Vendetti, Twila Bratcher Chair in Malacological Research, from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Dr. Vendetti will talk to us about the considerable amateur interest in Southern California native terrestrial gastropods and the recent iNaturalist project SLIME, created by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, has been instrumental in cataloging this fauna's biodiversity. Some surprising findings include where first occurrences of species have been found in Southern California and the composition of the non-native fauna. I'll discuss some interesting results from the iNaturalist SLIME project and City Nature Challenge (L.A. vs. S.F.) as well as methods to non-lethally collect DNA data from species of imperiled status. The Natural History Club is a student-run organization that focuses on educating its members about topics related to natural history, with particular emphasis on the biodiversity of Southern California. The club holds regular meetings on campus featuring invited speakers, and we take frequent field trips to observe and interact with native wildlife. Faculty, staff, graduates, and undergraduates with an interest in the natural history of Southern California are encouraged to attend. Please join us!
