City Nature Challenge 2021: April 30 - May 3

Conservation Team - ASSEMBLE!
It's almost time for the City Nature Challenge (April 30th - May 3rd). This year we have some friendly interstate competition within Texas, and we need your help to ensure Houston reigns supreme (and most importantly, that we beat Dallas)! If you haven't used iNaturalist in a while, dust off the app and make a few observations before the challenge starts to get your feet/claws/pseudopods underneath you. Then, get out on the Spring Creek Greenway and start bioblitzing! There are some great events going on along the greenway, with bioblitzes at Jesse Jones Park as a great way to rack up species. Or, just take your phone out to your backyard or local green space. This is your opportunity to contribute to community science, so let's show the best part of the world (aka Texas) what we have to offer! Let me know if you have any questions, or if you have an event that could use some cross promotion. You can follow Team Houston-Galveston on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. @hougalcnc

Yours in nature fandom,
Suzanne Simpson

Houston City Nature Challenge + Project Update

Greetings, iNaturalists!

Don't forget to spurn your regularly scheduled responsibilities and get outside THIS WEEKEND, April 27-30 for the Houston City Nature Challenge. Join the project on iNat (https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2018-houston) and get out there - from Galveston to Willis! The Spring Creek Greenway is an excellent place to find biodiversity. Check out Jesse Jones Park, Spring Trails Preserve, and George Mitchell Nature Preserve as a start. Bayou Land Conservancy will be partnering to lead a herp walk and general bioblitz of the West Fork San Jac Preserve on Saturday (https://www.facebook.com/events/218038468930344/).

Also, iNat has made some updates to their project administration, and the Spring Creek Greenway project has officially transitioned into a Collection Project. This will help auto-aggregate observations and exclude observations not on the Spring Creek Greenway. It also has a leaderboard feature, showing who has the most observations and most species (@mabernathy and @anewman respectively).

Can't wait to see what you find this weekend!

Get us to 1,000 observations!

Hey there, Naturalists!

The Spring Creek Greenway project is nearing 1,000 observations! In fact, as I'm typing this, we are only two away. I know it's hotter than the devil's sauna out there, but I hope you'll help us reach this milestone this week. Thank you for all the naturalist-ing you've done to get us to this point.

Yours in speciation,
Suzanne Simpson, Project Curator
