Diario del proyecto City Nature Challenge 2024: York

It has been a great experience to be a part of the first ever participation of York in the City Nature Challenge 2024 competing against 691 cities worldwide to make biodiversity observations! A huge thank you to everyone for your observations over the course of the four days of the inaugural York City Nature Challenge! This event could not have happened without everyone contributing in so many different ways from making observations to putting on events. The final results for the competition have come in and York has done amazingly well!

On the UK Leaderboard, we met all our goals to be in the Top 3 for each category! In the number of observers, York came in third place with 221 people making observations, only 9 people behind second place. York made a total of 12,833 observations and came in a very close second place (by only 41 observations)! And York got GOLD for the total number of species observed with 1487 different species! We came in first place by a wide margin with more than 147 species than our nearest competitor. Our most common observation was the 7-Spot Lady Beetle!

In the Global Leaderboard, York has done an amazing job of representing our part of the world! We placed 47th out of 691 cities, easily within the top 10% of competing cities. A fantastic job for our first year ever!

The inaugural York City Nature Challenge starts at midnight tonight! Are you ready to get out and make observations of WILD plants and animals using the iNaturalist app? You can make biodiversity observations as an individual or join one of the many events being hosted by various groups across greater York between 26-29th April. York is competing against ~700 cities worldwide and 23 other UK cities to have as much participation and observations of wildlife as possible over these 4 days!

Don’t forget that AFTER the City Nature Challenge there is the Identification Phase from 30 April - May 5, during which we need as many people who could help identify observations as close to species level as possible. Even if you aren't very knowledgeable about a particular species, helping us identify any 'Unknown' observations into groups like 'birds', 'flowering plants', 'butterfly', etc. is extremely useful! You can do this in your spare time, over a lunch break, or while hanging out in a garden by logging into the iNaturalist app on your phone or computer and "Suggesting IDs" for as many observations as you have time for. Helping with even just 1 observation (or 100!) is appreciated!

We hope that you as experienced iNaturalist users in York, UK can join us for the inaugural York City Nature Challenge 2024 which is ONE MONTH AWAY! For the first time ever, from 26-29th April, 2024, York will be joining over 500 cities worldwide in the the largest global biodiversity competition. We look forward to seeing what interesting and amazing biodiversity can be found in the greater York area during the Challenge!

You don't have to be an expert in identification to participate. To participate, simply take photographs of WILD plants, mammals, insects, birds, reptiles and more ANYWHERE in the greater York area (see project map) and upload them onto iNaturalist between 26-29 April, 2024. All of your observations will be collected automatically. Participation is free, easy, and fun, all while contributing to science and conservation action!

As you are the top iNaturalist users in the greater York city-region, we need your help and hope you’ll be able to participate! Please feel free to tag anyone else and let them know about York City Nature Challenge 2024. You can find out more information about participating on our website below. There will be events put on by participating organizations (see York CNC website) or you can participate on your own by making WILD plant and animal observations near your home, in your garden, in a nearby park or out in nature.

For the first time ever, the city of York will join over 450+ cities from all over the world in the CITY NATURE CHALLENGE (CNC), the LARGEST, SYNCHRONIZED, GLOBAL BIODIVERSITY COMPETITION!
Participation is free, easy, and fun, all while contributing to science and conservation action!

All you need to do is take pictures of WILD biodiversity - animals (including slugs, insects, spiders, birds, mammals, snakes, etc.), plants, weeds between built surfaces, fungi, etc. from anywhere within the Greater York boundary (see map) between 26-29 April, 2024. Then upload your images or sounds to iNaturalist and join the millions of people contributing to biodiversity research in their local area. All of your observations will be collected automatically.

As you are the top iNaturalist users in the York city-region, we need your help and hope you’ll be able to participate!
