Bear Scratches on Tree

Date: October 19,2017
Location: Outside of Beaver right of Birch Creek
Directions: Head North on I-15 from Cedar City. Take exit 110 in Beaver, Utah and head East. Wrap around to the North and take the first dirt road. Go East until you reach the Birch Creek restoration area.
Habitat: This is a riparian area. We were about 10 feet away from Birch Creek, an area we were actively restoring. The scratch mark was found on an aspen tree and it was found in an aspen stand.
Observers: Jamie Smith, Kalli Tyler, Stephanie Grischosky, Connor England
Time of Day: 5:30 pm
Amount of Time: 5 minutes
Wind: 1 on Beaufort scale
Temperature: 67 degrees Fahrenheit
Sky Condition: Partly Cloudy
Elevation: 6,000 feet
Species List: Bear
Comments: We were checking out the creek that we were restoring when our BLM wildlife biologist pointed out that the wildlife appears to like what we have done. We agreed that the scratches found on the aspen tree likely belonged to a bear, with the possibility of it also belonging to a cat of some sort.
