Basal scales squarose/spreading, but perhaps darker than typical? Described as having a light brown center. Haven't looked at this character before. Lamina completely lacking hairs (photo 5 adaxial costa), but with scattered scales with attenuate acumen. Venation obscure. Lustrous sheen, particularly on sterile pinnae. Could be intermediate with (or be) N. falcata? The only definite character I could find between the two was in basal scales, but appears that lamina tend to be more lustrous and pinnae are more petiolate?

Sheaths spreading pilose with papillose bases, particularly the lower Sheaths. Culm glabrous. Spikelets glabrous. Ligule of minute white hairs.

Trailside. Distal cladodes very easily disarticulating, littering surrounding area. Basal stems woody. Lower pads prostrate, with several distal pads erect. Largest pads 15 x 10 cm. Spines mostly solitary, to 4 cm. Few seeds in fruit. Large pad with 4 horizontal areoles. Glochids stramineous. Collected with permission.

Pads resprouting from large, underground, horizontal woody stem roughly 6 mos post-fire. Pads to 15 cm long, 7 cm wide. Generally 1 long spine/areole, to 3 cm, occasionally 2 spines. Glochids stramineous. Caducous leaves subulate, to 1 cm. Collected with permission.
