They have finally arrived. This is the first Eastern Gray I've seen, not only on this property, but on Marrowstone Island. Our hazels now will have to be shared by the Steller Jays and Doug squirrels.

It has been a daily ritual for quite a while to watch these birds hunt over this small freshwater marsh for insects. The dragonflies are difficult for them to catch, but they try nonetheless.

A presumed mating pair hovered and landed repeatedly in a small area of this marsh. The male seemed to be guarding the female as she dropped eggs from her multiple perches.

Grid is 1/8 inch. When disturbed with tweezers, it immediately began producing silk in profusion. Found near a greenhouse - oddly enough.

I collected two pupae from a filbert tree where I had documented lavae several days prior. These adults emerged after just a few days.

Speculating this is the third year this individual has made our garden pond home. It is quite removed from any natural wetlands.

The first photo shows where the tree was girdled in the spring of 2017. This is the third summer the tree above the girdle has supported fairly healthy and vigorous growth. Since this tree is not being fed by the roots, I am documenting how well this species can adapt and survive over a protracted time period without root fed water supply. I am open to speculations as to how the tree stores moisture in the wood or cambium well enough to maintain itself.

I'm a bit unsure of this ID, as the size of this bird was as large or larger than the Cedar Waxwings in the immediate area that I could compare it to. It was more the size of a grosbeak, but the plumage doesn't fit for that.
