Wildlife & road: Stop, swerve, or keep going?

As America’s roadways expand, humans continue to cross paths with the natural landscape and its animal inhabitants. The overlap between humanity and the wild is inevitable, especially as construction grows and animal populations fall victim to modern expansion.

Very interesting, thanks for posting. It is terribly hard (against instinct) not to swerve. I've had good and bad results with each practice. It's just according to individual incident. One poor woman in Napa swerved to avoid animal on the highway one night and ended up overturned in a ditch. The "animal" turned out to be a plush teddy bear. I could totally relate. Meanwhile, wildlife crossings are really helping the situation. More and more being built.

Part of CalTrans' design should be to automatically implement tunnels and overheads.
