“iNaturalist: Technology for the Master Naturalist”
iNaturalist has emerged as the top reporting electronic tool for tracking, identifying and sharing wildlife sightings. As one of the leading participants of the program, Sam Kieschnick has put together a tutorial for fellow Master Naturalists to join this Citizen Science project. For educators, iNaturalist is also a way to help get young people interested in exploring the outdoors.
Sam Kieschnick enjoys teaching people about nature. There is beauty in nature, and Sam loves to share it with everyone he meets. While studying for his Master’s Degree from Tarleton State University, he analyzed the genetics of pocket gophers – those little rodents that burrow into the ground. Sam also traveled to Puerto Rico on a month-long research trip to study how snails respond to hurricanes. He has collected plant specimens from all around Texas and enjoys finding as many different species as he can.
The Indian Trail Chapter is part of the statewide Texas Master Naturalist Volunteer Program of the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.
This program is part of a series of “no cost” “open to the public” Master Naturalist programs offered the fourth Monday (generally) of each month, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Please bring a friend! Sounds great! Sam, is this going to be similar to the other presentation you gave recently? Or will this be more of a hands-on demo? Just curious as I think about a presentation I'm going to give later this month!
@carrieseltzer -- it's going to be very similar to the one I just gave. I may go a little bit more into the process of uploading observations though. I didn't hit on that enough on the last one.

I'm trying to get the DC Fisheries and Wildlife Division using iNaturalist so I need to prepare a presentation that's more of a pitch to "project managers" than to users. I haven't started it yet, but I'm planning to use some elements of yours, Sam, and probably pieces from Cullen's presentation about Texas Nature Trackers (Is that ok with you, @cullen?). I'll definitely share it when I'm done!

Seriously, as I was talking to folks, it sounds like they REALLY want to participate -- I hope they do! I'll be keeping my eyes open for observations coming out of that area. :)
