Let the observations begin!

At midnight tonight citizen scientists can start uploading their observations for the Great Southern Bioblitz project.

Let's showcase Lake Mac's amazing natural environment to the 147 areas and 12 countries participating. We look forward to seeing , and confirming, your IDs of all living things (plants and critters) both terrestrial and marine, diurnal and nocturnal.

Good morning Margo. I am looking forward to taking and uploading some photos today. I agree, Lake Macquarie has an amazing richness of life, big and small, in the sky, lake, sea, trees, and soil.

However, I must say I baulked at being involved in something with such a violent name. I don't know who thought up the name bioblitz, but it an unfortunate choice. I know we are accustomed to using language like this in daily life, but may I suggest that we here, on a site where the aim is to be amazed, delighted and respectful of living beings, we might pause and choose to be more thoughtful. I know you did not choose the name, but perhaps the people who did will rethink it for next year.

Here is a definition of the word "blitz":

"an overwhelming all-out attack, especially a swift ground attack using armored units and air support.
an intensive aerial bombing.
any swift, vigorous attack, barrage, or defeat"

The word "bioblitz" suggest the mass killing off of all life! There are enough people in this area wielding spraycans of poison against all sorts of plant and animal life. Let's not encourage them!

I do hope that by next year the organisers choose a name that is more life-affirming and gentle.

Despite the name I hope we will all enjoy our discoveries this weekend. Thank you for organising this local activity.

Hi Janet,
Bioblitz projects have been around for a number of years, I'm not sure anyone had thought of the project and what each group is hoping to achieve in that vein of thought; point taken.

I have tried to upload photos to this site. They go to Bowerbird, but not to Lake Mac GSB site, even when I begin by opening this site. Help needed please.

@janetgrevillea I'm advised by the admin team so long as they are uploaded to iNaturalist they will be picked up in the project areas although there may be a delay @stephen169 @dragonette

@janetgrevillea Observations are added to the project once they are research grade. 'Your' butcherbird is the first Lake Mac entry :)

Yep everything gets added to the capture project. Submissions can be added to more than one project (e.g. you local GSBioblitz project and FungiMap etc).
