A new phylogeny of this tribe has recently been published and several flags (one here ) have already been raised. The case for making some taxon swaps seems compelling but it will take some time for POWO to update, so do we wait or deviate?

M. minensis and C. albicaulis are clearly vicariant sister species and should be placed in the same genus. The conservative approach would be to include them both in Cereus where they fit quite well alongside species such C. phatnospermus and C. spegazzinii.

Hi All,

I feel we ought to be able to sort out this genus. There are many observations identified only to genus level which with a little work could probably be improved. The main culprits are those species in Chile, from where there are many names and the genus is poorly understood, and those from southern Mendoza, where the difficulty arises primarily from confusion between M. ovata, darwinii, hickenii and platyacantha. Undoubtedly iNat will need to expand the taxonomy of the genus to accommodate some of these.

To make a start I've uploaded a couple of articles from Cactaceae Systematics Initiatives written by David Hunt who made several trips to study the genus. After seeing the plants in habitat he had a marked change of opinion regarding what was originally published in The New Cactus Lexicon. You can find the articles here.

I've also uploaded a couple of observations of cultured plants that I believe to be examples of M. hickenii and M. platyacantha which hopefully will help with future identifications.

For sometime now I've noticed and commented on the confusion between these two genera. Some epithets listed under Borzicactus should be placed under Cleistocactus and vice versa. Several epithets are even listed under both genera! To help clarify the situation I've prepared a small document listing the affected epithets, their current placement in iNat, and where I feel they should be listed. You can find the document here:

I've extracted aswell a part the list of Mammillaria names from Pedro's document and added two new columns (Linzen Name) for Thomas Linzen a Mammillaria collector from Irxleben, Germany (in my opinion the best connoisseur of Mammillaria right now) 'Proposed (JM)' for the species I think it would be reasonable to accept together with some notes. Species that should be discussed especially are marked yellow. You can find the document here:

Similar to what I did for Cleistocactus here is another document for Trichocereus:

This genus is a little more complicated as neither POWO nor Lode include all species in their respective lists. Further POWO which we wouldn't expect to accept Trichocereus actually does but with a very incomplete list of species. Many of the missing ones they accept under Echinopsis!

It looks like Kew didn't complete the transfer of some Trichocereus names into Echinopsis in their database. Very confusing.

En discusiones previas se ha establecido por parte de KEW y POWO su anuencia a cambiar de taxonomía hasta que exista una lista publicada; en este punto de inflexión nos vemos obligados a crear una lista con apoyo de todos los especialistas en el tema para establecer y publicar una lista creada por medio de la transdisciplina trabajando en redes, cosa sin precedentes.

Que hace falta:

1.- terminar la lista
-La columna C establece la taxonomía de POWO (no modificar por favor)

-La columna D establece la taxonomía de Lodé (abierta a discusión)

-La columna E establece la taxonomía para Echinocereus establecida por el Grupo Internacional de Trabajo en Echinocereus

-La columna F está libre para añadir notas sobre especies nuevas, sugerencias para revisar, otras taxonomías

Falta agregar otros sinónimos si hay problemas en su identificación; si se piensa publicar la lista creo que, sería prudente entonces agregar a los autores en cada taxon y, agregar los sinónimos con sus autores en una celda contigua.
Otro punto interesante sería poner la bibliografía en cada taxa;
De igual manera la distribución, al menos por país.
