Brief natural history of KMLA : Today, much (over 80 %) of the school area is uncultivated, mostly forested land. Before 1973, the land was covered by a number of small farms; these farms have disappeared, but remnants of a concrete road connecting them to the outside world are still found in the KMLA forest.
In 1973 a dairy ranch was established here; cow roads were established to allow the cows to cross the mountain (680 m; school altitude 540 m); the area was landscaped to create cow-friendly meadows; western grass seed was imported (because oriental grass died off in the fall, western grass does not), and sacks of western grass did include seeds of "weeds".
Later, a milk factory was established, and the dairy farm business given up. Nature was allowed to take over the pasture land; the steeper hillsides were terraced and planted with trees. Photos from old days show very few trees in this area.
In 1996 the school was founded, and this meant more landscaping in the inner school area. In 2004 the milk factory was sold; the KMLA forest (farmland turned into pasture and then allowed to turn into a forest) remains property of the school, largely unmanaged (except for 2014, when part of the land was deforested, so that the timber could be sold off). menos ↑
