Submitting Observations to the Southwest Avian Mortality Project

First off, thank you to everyone who wants to and has already contributed to this project. You are helping wildlife biologists understand the extent of the mass avian morality.

Secondly, here are some helpful links for new iNaturalist users to learn how to submit an observation.
iNaturalist Getting Started Guide has some simple instructions for how to submit an observation: https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/getting+started
And some tutorial videos for mobile app and web uploader:
https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/video+tutorials#add_mob

Thank you all again for your observations and check back to this page in the future for updates.

As I look through the observations of dead migratory birds, it's breaking my heart. I hope the reason for all these deaths can be figured out soon. I have had two Warbling vireos and a warbler dead in my yard this year. I have never had that before. So glad you are researching this.

I live in Las Vegas and over the last month I have had over 50 Doves dead in my yard. A couple of my neighbors are finding them as well.

I saw approx 12 dead sparrows just lying below a couple of trees next to the road on July 6, 2020 in Sonora Texas. It was in front of an abandoned gas station next to a donut shop called Snowflake Donuts just off of Hwy 10. I thought It was very sad and very odd!

I started noticing a group of brown Chickadees that showed up the end of July very sickly looking, three died in just two days. I buried them worried because of Covid 19, but two recoverd. Not sure if they were of same grouping. I started adding vitamins and herbs to my outside water sources in the hopes to stop sickness , and started more clean up. Soon noticed 2 Red house Finches sick and hopping around on the ground in first of September.

I live in Castle Valley UT about 20 east of Moab at 5100 ft, pinyon juniper sagebrush habitat) We found 2 dead male Wilson's warblers on 9/11/20. This coincided with the cold front/storm arriving 9/8 ( as described by New Mex folks), with high sustained winds (gusts to 45mph) and rain (0.5 in) -that rolled through. On 9/8 the air pressure dropped dramatically; air temp was 66° at 6am (MDT) and 37° by 11am. High of 45. Lows 9/9, 9/10. 9/11 of 37-39°. We are positive one bird died mid morning 9/11. It has been smoky off and on but very thick 9/6 and 9/7 (closest PM10 in in Grand Junction 85 miles away - trying to access that data). One is frozen in case there is a place to send for autopsy. We have not spotted any other dead birds this summer. However, other in our valley and in Moab have reported dead birds in early August - no species named. On positive note, this storm did bring in some migrants earlier than 'usual'. The male Wilson's appear to be with a flock that has settled in since the storm - they seem to be getting rest and refueled.
