These have the most prominent keel I’ve seen of the q. rubra bud galls. Significant smaller than most of the other ones as well.

Extended swelling above apparent exited gall of Papaipema circumlucens larva in lower section of Humulus lupulus vine in alder swamp. I've had a devil of a time trying to rear these, with 5 attempts from different dates and different sites now failed. Found a larva still in a gall on this date and attempting 6th rearing... There is another stem swelling gall in Humulus lupulus around here that seems to belong to Lasioptera humulicaulis, but these swellings seem to be smaller, less robust, often more elongate, in varied parts of the vine, and lacking an exit hole or accumulated frass within. See linked observation. The galls and larvae of this species seem to be fairly common in H. lupulus around here. I haven't heard any reports of other Papaipema larvae using this host and with same phenology and symptymatology, but I'm not 100% on ID within the genus. No idea if nebris ever uses this host or would have the same gall-inducing effect? Fingers crossed this 6th rearing attempt will be successful, or else try again next year, I suppose.

Extended swelling above apparent exited gall of Papaipema circumlucens larva in lower section of Humulus lupulus vine in alder swamp. ID uncertain. These seem to be fairly common in H. lupulus around here. Noted initially while searching for similar galls of Papaipema circumlucens, which seems to be associated with thicker galls generally near the base of the plant (but not always), and an exit hole. This stem swelling just up from the P. circumlucens area, still part of the same swelling.
