A patch of about 10 plants was found near the top of a small granite dome outcrop in a red oak/ white pine forest. The small top of the dome was bare rock. A large white pine on the shoulder of the dome had blown over. All of the plants were growing from cracks in the bedrock exposed by the uprooted tree. No others were seen anywhere else.

A “naturally” occurring sapling seeded in from a row of old planted trees close by. The cone photo is from the planted trees, for reference. Note the long needles that radiate around the stem. Lots of odd conifers planted in this area, which was reportedly a nursery many decades ago.

top of ovary is glabrous. Petals average <= 12 mm. Some pedicels are a bit long, but generally < 15 mm. This could also be A. arborea. I went with A. canadensis in part due to more upright, not lax or drooping inflorescence.

This is the third Inaturalist post of the species in all of New England. If you've ever wondered how small it is and how difficult to find, these photos should give you some idea. Although I was the lead in the survey, these plants were spotted by the sharp eyes of Emily M. who is working on surveys for this species funded by a grant from New England Botanical Society.
